In the dimly lit hotel suite, the lighting cast a sultry, ambiguous glow across the room.
Elena Bennett found herself entangled with a strikingly handsome stranger, stumbling into a heated kiss.
Tonight, her ex-boyfriend, Gavin Hayes, had announced his engagement. Heartbroken and heavily intoxicated, Elena had been led here under the influence of alcohol and the allure of a mysterious man.
If Gavin could so easily discard their four-year relationship for the heiress of a wealthy family, then surely she could allow herself one night of indulgence.
As things got dangerously close, she murmured, almost unconsciously, “Gavin Hayes…”
Everything came to an abrupt halt.
A soft click and the lights brightened… revealing the face of the man before her.
Ethan Harlow, the country’s most distinguished attorney, known in legal circles as the "King of Hell." A prominent figure in the city, his assets were vast, and his influence was far-reaching.
And, in an ironic twist, he was Gavin’s older brother—the very man who had betrayed her.
Elena sobered instantly.
Closing her eyes briefly, she thought, *How ridiculous! I almost ended up in bed with my ex’s brother.*
Ethan released her, leaning against the wall, lighting a cigarette as he scrutinized her with an amused expression. “Well, this is interesting… Miss Bennett.”
Flicking the ash from his cigarette, he smirked slightly, “What were you thinking while kissing me? Were you hoping to sleep with me to make Gavin sick?”
It was clear Ethan recognized her, too.
There was no pretending for Elena.
Ethan Harlow was far too well-known; even if, in her drunken haze, she hadn’t recognized him, she could not pretend otherwise now.
Realizing she couldn’t afford to offend someone of his standing, Elena lowered her head apologetically. “I’m sorry, Mr. Harlow. I had too much to drink.”
Ethan didn’t make things difficult. Finishing his cigarette, he straightened, tossing her a jacket. “Put this on. I’ll take you home.”
Elena accepted the jacket, murmuring her thanks.
Ethan’s Bentley Continental glided through the quiet streets, and the silence inside the car was heavy.
Occasionally, Elena glanced at him, noting his perfectly chiseled profile and his refined shirt, subtle yet clearly high-end. A man like Ethan was unlikely to lack admirers.
When they arrived, he turned slightly, his gaze lingering briefly on her long, pale legs. Reaching into the glove compartment, he handed her a business card.
It was clear what the card implied.
Elena hadn’t expected that, even after recognizing her, he’d still pursue anything with her.
Though Ethan’s allure was undeniable, and the idea of a brief affair was tempting, his connection to Gavin made her feel uneasy. After a moment’s hesitation, she declined, “Mr. Harlow, I think it’s best if we don’t stay in touch.”
Ethan took it in stride.
Retracting the card, he gave her a faint nod. “Women like you indeed seem suited for a respectable life.”
Elena felt a bit embarrassed, but Ethan remained gentlemanly as he stepped out to open her door, as if erasing all traces of the evening’s encounter.
The golden Bentley drove off slowly, and a gust of wind sent a chill through Elena, reminding her she’d forgotten to return his jacket.
As she debated whether to chase after him, her phone rang.
It was Aunt Lily, her voice frantic with urgency. “Elena, come home right away. Something has happened!”
Elena asked for details, but Aunt Lily, voice thick with emotion, only urged her to return immediately.
When Elena arrived home, she found Aunt Lily on the couch, looking dazed. Her eyes were red and swollen from crying.
Looking around the empty house, Elena asked quietly, “Aunt Lily, what’s going on? Where’s Dad?”
Aunt Lily, her father’s second wife, couldn’t contain her anger.
“That ungrateful wretch Gavin Hayes! He’s ruthless!” she spat.
“A few years ago, your father stuck by him through his worst times, and now that he’s back on his feet, he not only dumped you but is trying to send your father to jail! He’s in a detention center right now.”
Elena was stunned. “Aunt Lily, please don’t worry. I’ll… I’ll talk to Gavin.”
She thought, *We may no longer be a couple, but surely there’s still some sentiment left between us. Gavin wouldn’t be that heartless.*
Dialing his number, she waited as the line connected.
She kept her tone gentle. “Gavin, we’ve already broken up. I’m begging you, please don’t take out your anger on my father.”
Gavin scoffed, his tone filled with derision.
“That’s a large sum missing, Elena. Someone has to take responsibility.”
Elena tried to plead further, but Gavin’s tone shifted. “There’s another way, but it depends on whether you’re willing. Spend five years with me, Elena, and I’ll let your father go.”
Elena froze.
She hadn’t expected Gavin to be this shameless, demanding both her father’s support and her body for his gain.
She trembled with anger. “You make me sick, Gavin Hayes!”
He laughed dismissively. “Haven’t you always known what kind of man I am?”
Elena gritted her teeth. “I’ll never be your kept woman! Don’t even think about it, Gavin Hayes!”
He laughed coldly. “Then you’d better prepare to find a lawyer for your father. And don’t say I didn’t warn you—ten years, minimum.”
Elena sneered, “I’ll find the best lawyer.”
“Are you thinking of Ethan Harlow?” Gavin laughed calmly. “Don’t forget, Elena, he’s about to become my brother-in-law. You think he’d represent you?”
A chill spread through Elena as she hung up.
Gavin’s mocking words lingered: “I’ll be waiting for you to beg me, Elena.”
As she ended the call, Aunt Lily erupted.
“That b*st*rd!”
“He’s dreaming if he thinks we’d send you to him willingly.” Tears filled her eyes as she continued. “But that Ethan Harlow… as Gavin’s future brother-in-law, how could we possibly hire him? Elena, you need to think of something.”
Elena lowered her gaze.
After a moment, she spoke softly, “I’ve met Mr. Harlow once. I’ll… I’ll see if I can try.”
Aunt Lily’s sharp eyes took in the faint smell of alcohol on Elena and the men’s jacket draped over her shoulders, realizing what might have happened.
She chose not to say anything.
*
Seeing Ethan Harlow, however, would not be easy.
At the lobby of “Jayceon & Co.,” the receptionist greeted her with polite detachment. “I’m sorry, Miss, but without an appointment, I can’t let you go upstairs.”
Elena regretted not accepting his business card last night.
She asked, “If I make an appointment now, how soon can I see Mr. Harlow?”
The receptionist checked her schedule. “The earliest would be in two weeks.”
Anxiousness crept over Elena.
Just then, the elevator at the corner opened, and a man and woman stepped out.
It was Ethan Harlow.
He was dressed in a classic black and white suit, exuding the dignified elegance of a true elite.
Beside him was an attractive woman in her early thirties, with a figure that commanded attention.
Ethan’s gaze flickered to Elena momentarily but showed no sign of recognition. He continued escorting his client to the door.
With practiced decorum, he shook the woman’s hand.
The woman’s voice was soft and alluring. “Mr. Harlow, I couldn’t have won my divorce case without you. My husband became so stingy after finding a new lover…”
Ethan gave her a polite smile. “I was only doing my job.”
The woman attempted to draw him in. “How about a drink tonight, Mr. Harlow?”
Elena’s gaze lingered on the woman. With her looks, it seemed unlikely any man would refuse her.
But Ethan was no ordinary man.
He checked his watch and politely declined, “Unfortunately, I already have plans tonight.”
The woman, reading his subtle rejection, smiled and departed gracefully.
As she left, Ethan paused by the receptionist’s desk, turning his attention to Elena.
“So, you’ve changed your mind?”
