Chapter 1: The unexpected news

Nneoma Okeke sat in her small apartment surrounded by textbooks and notes, her mind racing with numbers and formulas. She was a final year student at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, studying accounting. Her goal was clear: to become a financial analyst and support her grandma who had health issues.

Just as she was about to dive into her revision, her phone buzzed,it was her stepmom, Mrs Okeke.

“ Nneoma, come home. We need to talk,” her stepmom said, her voice firm but laced with an underlying excitement.

Nneoma’s heart skipped a bit.” What’s wrong, mother?"

We’ll discuss when you get here. "Just come home," her stepmom replied before hanging up. Nneoma felt a knot form in her stomach. She quickly packed her bags and headed home, wondering what would be so urgent.

When she arrived, her stepmom was sitting in the living room with a serious expression.

“Nneoma, your father and I have been discussing your future." You're almost done with school, and it's time we arrange your marriage,” her stepmom announced.

Nneoma’s eyes widened in shock.

“Marriage? But mother,I’m not ready! I'm still in school, and I have a career to think about. Her stepmom waved her hand dismissively,” Your career will be fine." Marriage is what's important now, and we’ve found a good man for you.” Nneoma's curiosity piqued.” Who is he?”

Chike Nwosu, his family is influential, and he's doing well in business. You'll make a good couple,” her stepmom said, as if it was already settled.

Nneoma's mind reeled. Chike Nwosu? She’d heard of him — his reputation as a ruthless businessman preceded him. She wasn't sure she wanted to marry someone like that.

Her stepmom shook her head.” The arrangements are already in place." The wedding will be next month, so you need to prepare.

Nneoma felt like her world was spinning out of control. Next month? She hadn't even met Chike Nwosu for once. How could her parents make such decisions without consulting her?
