Chapter 3: First impression

Nneoma's parents exchanged pleasentries with Chike's family as they entered the mansion. Nneoma's eyes widened as she took in opulent decorations and expansive space. She had never seen anything like it. As they sat for dinner, Chike's gaze met hers, and Nneoma felt a spark of irritation. There was something about his confident demeanor that rubbed her the wrong way. The conversation during dinner was stilted with Nneoma's parents and Chike's family discussing business and politics. Nneoma tried to contribute, but Chike dominated the conservation, barely letting anyone else get a word in edgewise. As the evening wore on, Nneoma found herself growing more and more annoyed with Chike's condescending attitude. She couldn't believe her parents were serious about marrying her off to this arrogant man. After dinner, Chike walked Nneoma to the car, his hand on her elbow. " So what do you think of me?" he asked, his eyes glinting with amusement. Nneoma pulled her elbow free. " I think you're interesting," she said coolly. Chike chuckled." Interesting?" That's a new one. Most women would say handsome, charming or intelligent. Nneoma raised an eyebrow. " I'm not most women." Chike's smile grew wider." I like that!" As they drove away, Nneoma turned to her parents." I don't think this is going to work," she said, trying to keep her voice steady. Her mother placed a reassuriringhand on her knee." Give it time, Nney " you'll learn to love him Nneoma wasn't sure .
