The Interview

By the time I woke up the next morning, I had already made up my mind. Aureon. The thought had been sitting in the back of my head since last night. After hearing Leo and Victor talk about the leak inside the company, I knew Aureon was where I needed to be. Sitting around the Moretti estate would only get me so much information. If I wanted to understand what was really going on, I needed to see the company for myself. The only problem was getting inside without making it look suspicious. Luckily, I didn’t have to come up with an excuse. I found Alessia in the living room, sitting cross-legged on the sofa with her laptop balanced on her thighs. She looked up when I walked in. “You’re awake so early.” “I couldn’t sleep.” “Again?” “Don’t remind me.” She moved her laptop aside and patted the couch beside her for me to sit. “Come sit. You look like you have something on your mind.” I sat beside her. “I actually do.” Her expression immediately became curious. “What?” “I’ve been thinking about getting a job.” She blinked. “Already?” “Why does everyone keep saying that?” “Because you’ve been here for, what, two days?” “I know.” “And you’re already looking for a job?” “I’m not planning to sit in this house every day doing nothing.” “You wouldn’t be doing nothing.” “Alessia, yesterday you dragged me around the estate for hours.” “And?” “And I don’t think that’s a career.” She burst out laughing. “Okay, fair.” “I studied business administration. I’d actually like to use it.” A thoughtful look crossed her face.“You know what?” “What?” “You could work at Aureon.” I paused. I tried very hard not to let my reaction show. “Aureon?” “Yeah.” She looked at me like the answer was obvious. “You studied business, and my brother is always complaining that he needs more competent people.” I raised an eyebrow. “Your brother complains about everything.” “That is also true.” She chuckled. “But seriously, you’d probably fit in.” I hesitated, pretending to consider it. “Wouldn’t that be awkward?” “Why?” “Because I’m staying in your house, and now I’d be working for your family too.” “So?” “I don’t know. It just feels like too much.” She shook her head, her expression softening. “Clara, you’re not asking Leo to give you money. You’re asking him for a job.” I nodded slowly, letting her words sink in. “I wouldn’t want you to ask him to hire me just because I’m here, though.” “I wasn’t planning to. I was going to tell him you want an interview.” “An interview?” “Obviously. You still have to prove you’re qualified.” She closed her laptop. “Come on. Let’s go find him.” “Now?” “Yes.” We found Leo in the study standing near the window with his phone in one hand, listening to someone on the other end. His expression changed slightly when he saw us, but he didn’t say anything. A few seconds later, he ended the call. “What?” Alessia frowned. “Good morning to you too.” “Good morning.” “See? That wasn’t difficult.” Leo looked at me briefly before turning back to his sister. “What do you want?” “I wanted to ask you something.” “Okay?” She glanced at me. “Clara is looking for a job.” Leo’s eyes moved toward me again. And I tried to keep my expression as calm as possible. “She studied business administration,” Alessia continued. “I thought she could apply at Aureon.” Leo was quiet. Then he asked me, “What position?” “I honestly don’t know yet.” “Why Aureon?” I hesitated. “Because it fits what I studied. And I’d rather work somewhere I can actually learn something.” His eyes remained on me. “Do you have experience?” “A little. Internships and some work during school.” “What kind?” I answered honestly, giving him enough information without saying too much.
He listened without interrupting. When I finished, his attention shifted to Alessia. “She can interview.” “See? That wasn’t so hard.” A grin tugged at Alessia’s lips. Leo ignored her completely, returning his attention to the files in front of him. “Human Resources will handle it.” “So when should she come?” Alessia asked, clearly pleased with herself. “Tomorrow.” “That’s fast.” Leo looked at her over the top of the file. “You wanted an interview.” “I know. I’m just surprised.” “You’re the one who brought it up.” She rolled her eyes. “Fine.” Leo picked up his phone again. “HR will contact her with the details.” “Okay.” Alessia turned toward me, looking rather pleased with how easily everything had worked out. “See? Done.” “Thank you.” Leo was already checking something on his phone. “Don’t thank me yet.” I looked at him. “Why?” “If you’re not qualified, the interview won’t matter.” Alessia stared at him for a second. “You could try being encouraging once in your life.” “I am just being honest.” “You’re impossible.” Leo didn’t bother responding. He slipped his phone into his pocket and walked past us, leaving the study without another word. I watched him disappear down the hallway. Alessia let out a quiet sigh. “Don’t mind him. He’s like that with everyone.” I went back to my room and shut the door tight behind me. My phone rang, and when I saw the unfamiliar number on the screen, my stomach tightened slightly. “Hello?” “Good afternoon. Am I speaking with Clara Bennett?” “Yes.” “This is Aureon Human Resources. I’m calling regarding your application. Your interview has been scheduled for tomorrow morning at nine.” “Tomorrow?” “Yes. Does that work for you?” “Yes, absolutely.” “We’ll send the address and interview details to your email.” “Thank you.” “You’re welcome. Have a good afternoon.” The call ended. I stared at the screen for a moment before opening the email that had just arrived. Nine in the morning. Aureon headquarters. My chest tightened with a strange mixture of excitement and relief. After everything it had taken to get this far, I was finally going to step inside Leo Moretti’s company. The door I’d been looking for had just opened.
