"I'm coming!" I heard Vickie shout from inside her apartment.
I could barely control my excitement as I squealed from outside waiting for her to open the door and jump.
I bounced on the balls of my feet, giddy with excitement. Five years. It had been five long years since I'd last seen my best friend in person. No more laggy video calls or glitchy goodbyes.
This moment had been a long time coming, and I could barely contain myself.
I didn't inform her I'd be coming to see her so her excitement would be gold. Maybe I should make a recording of it.
Just as I pulled out my phone, I heard the lock click. My heart leaped in anticipation. Then—of course—my phone slipped from my fingers. Time slowed as it tumbled through the air, and I barely managed to snatch it mid-fall before the door swung wide open.
"Hi?" I smiled sheepishly, waving my hand at an awestruck looking Vickie. My best friend. Her jet black hair was messy like she just woke up, she was wearing a baggy shirt and shorts.
Her grey eyes were so wide, I was surprised her eyes didn't drop. "K-kris-Kristen?" She stammered, her hands twitching as her eyes began to water.
"Heyyyy, no tears." I said as I pulled her into a tight hug.
She sniffled as she buried her face in my dress. "You very, very awful Human! You didn't tell me you were coming."
I grinned, holding her tighter. “How else was I supposed to get this Oscar-worthy reaction?”
She pulled away, eyes a little red, cheeks flushed with emotion. “God, I’ve missed you.”
“Same. Now…can I come in, or are we doing our reunion on the porch?”
“Get your butt in here,” she said with a sniff, grabbing the handle of my travel bag and wheeling it inside.
Her house was quite impressive. I could see stickers of artists and girly aesthetic pasted on the walls. Of course, clothes were hanging around and I could spot a shoe on the kitchen sink.
Typical Vickie.
"How long have you been planning for this day?" She asked as she slumped on a chair in her living room, my traveling bag on the floor beside it.
"Two weeks." I replied with a smile.
Her face was still full of shock. "You, slutty b***h! We still f*****g talked yesterday."
"Yeah, yeah. Decided I needed a vacation from work and home. My pack was being too chocky so I thought, why don't I plan a visit to my favorite b***h's place. Stay there for a week or two, you know, get back on track physically and not socially. So, here I am."
"What do you mean a week or two?" She gave me a look. "b***h, you're staying here for a month or two. I've got so much to show you and so much for us to do."
I laughed at that. "Well, I'm not too busy."
She grinned from ear to ear. "Perfect!" She pumped her first in the air. "Now, let me go get your room set up." As she moved to pick up my traveling from the floor, her hoodie adjusted on her body, exposing her neck where a fresh large hickey was.
"Oh. My. f*****g. Days." She paused to look at me.
"What's wrong?" She asked, confusion on her face.
I moved over to where she sat, my phone in hand as I took advantage of her momentary confusion and quickly took a picture before she could swat my hand away.
"What's there?" She asked as she tried itching her neck to try feel something.
I flashed the screen at her, zooming in on the purple-red mark. “You little sneak. You have a new man, and you didn’t tell me?!”
Her cheeks turned beet red as she reached for the phone again. “Delete that!”
I dodged her, holding the phone above my head. “Not until you spill. Who is he? Is he hot? Is he pack? Is he human?”
She groaned, covering her face. “Ughhh, you’re the worst. It’s new okay? I didn’t want to jinx it.”
“Mmhmm,” I teased. “Judging by that hickey, it’s very new. Is that why it took so long to answer the door?”
She blinked. “No! That’s not—”
“Is he still here?” I whispered, eyes wide. “Is he hiding in your room?”
Her mouth opened, then closed.
“Oh, my goddess. He was here!”
Blushing furiously, she grabbed my bag and bolted toward the hallway. “I hate you, Kristina!”
I laughed as I chased after her. “You love me, and you know it. You better tell me everything later!”
“Fine,” she huffed. “But after we clean up a bit. And make lunch. There’s a party tonight.” She opened the guest room door and gestured for me to enter.
It was mostly bland with sky blue paintings on the wall and a white painted ceiling. A chair was on the far corner of the room with a wardrobe and then a bed. Beside the bed was a table with a medium sized mirror on it.
"A party?" I questioned, bouncing on the bed.
"Yup. The Alpha's throwing a party. It's his twenty-seventh birthday."
My eyes widened at that. "Your Alpha is that young? Is he cute?"
Vickie threw me a look. “Nope. Off limits. Don’t even think about it. The council’s crazy protective. If they even suspect you’re flirting with him, you’ll be packed up and mailed back home in a box.”
“Boring,” I pouted. “My Alpha back home is forty-two and married, and I can't count the number of s*x we've had.”
"You slutty b***h," Vickie laughed, throwing a pillow at me. "You're twenty-five."
"Not on bed though." We laughed at that.
"Don't worry, you'll get a lot of sexier and hotter guys here. I'm sure of that. They're tasted and trusted." She winked at me and we bursted out laughing again.
"But now that I think about it, I don't think I brought a fancy dress for a party." I said.
"Leave that for me." Vickie said as she raised the window blinds, opening the window. "I've got tons of sexy, party dresses."
"Perfect! Now let's go get something to eat before I die of hunger."
She rolled her eyes. “I don’t know where all the food you eat goes.”
I gave her a smug look. “You seen this ass? It's big enough to have its own zip code.”
She cackled. “Get out of here, you clown!”
I darted toward the kitchen with her hot on my heels, laughter echoing down the hallway.
