That information that popped in my head out of the blue didn't let me sleep the rest of the night. I was thinking hard, maybe, this was the first thing I have to remember about my past life. I knew I was in Chicago, but I didn't know why. My guess was that being away from home, I was probably away with my friends or something.... Or maybe it was a family trip? My mind raced with questions the whole night. I wanted to know more about the day I died. Before I knew it, the sun rises up the horizon. I, having no sleep the previous night, dragged myself to take a shower and jump into some comfy baggy clothing. I was just so sick of wearing dresses. Today, I had planned to go and look around the place. I walked past by the creepy door and couldn't help but peek at the spot where the marks were at. The morning was normal, just like yesterday. But today, Mrs. Lincoln was in a good mood. She was talking about some woman who made a deal of some sorts with her. I was too caught up by everything that happened yesterday and last night so I didn't really hear anything. I was just eating my breakfast and secretly hopin no one would ask me if I remember anything. I didn't bring the topic up myself even though I wanted some answers.
Breakfast flew by. I helped with the dishes and then asked Mrs. Lincoln if I could look around Moonsville. "Why don't you go with Asher?" She said sounding calm her excited. "I was actually thinking about Gra-" "I can go with her, mother." I mentally cussed when Asher offered to go with me. I knew it was because he wanted to tell me things but I was feeling a little too nauseous with all the information already, I didn't want to hear anything else. Right now my main concern was about my past life, and I highly doubt Asher will have any answers to that. I convinced myself to go with him, hoping that he might tell me something else... Any secrets of some sorts. So here I was, walking outside the gate silently with Asher walking besides me. His hands in his pockets as always. We walked in silence, an awkward one to be more clear. "You won't find anything exciting here." Asher said. "Why'd you say that?" "I'll show you." He started jogging towards the town square. I started jogging to catch up too. Outside the gates was a road. After 5 minutes of walk the road split into two tracks. The left one led into a forest which seemed very dark and mysterious. The forest was thick and passing it felt like something in there is whispering. The weather was moderate but there was a cold wind blowing out form the forest. We took the right track. It was a jogging track. On the right side there were planes. You could be nothing but green land for as long as your eyes can see. There was a farm with fields about half a mile away and you could see the dull outline of the mountains. "I think it's pretty." I said observing around. Asher stopped and turned to look at me. "It is but we can't be in there." "Why?" "Well... The farmers own this part. You can't go inside an area that someone owns unless you have their permission. And lemme tell you, this grumpy ol' man would never let anyone even near his farms." "That's a disappointment... I was looking forward to going on walks here." "Well you can't, also,. The forest is restricted" "We're dead, why's it restricted?" "I dunno, rumours about something from Hell roaming here that eat souls... Which we are." "Yeah, ok." I laughed sarcastically. "I'm serious, don't go there." Asher rolled his eyes. "I thought you were a quite person, you talk a lot." I commented. "One, I'm talking that as a compliment and two in not quite I'm just..." He trailed off. "You're what?" I asked catching up with him. At this point, I was really tired. Asher didn't say anything and just walked. "Ok mister, I don't know who do you think you are but I know that you won't dare come with me today unless you wanted to tell me something. If you think that I'm some sort of softie then uh-uh you are wrong, sir. I swear if you cut off another conversation again, I'm not gonna tell you anything." Asher stopped once again and turned to look at me with a shocked face. "Did you just diss me?" "Do you want me to continue." I snapped. "Jeez, girl, relax." Asher chuckled.
"So, we're gonna stop here. You're gonna tell me what you know, I will tell you what I know, then we can continue to look around." I suggested. "Nope." "What? What do you mean no? Why'd you come with me then?" I asked, taken back. "If you haven't noticed yet, then let me clear it for you. Mom and I don't get along, ok? I would do anything to get out of that hell hole." "Hell hole?" I asked, rasing my brow. "Ok, Evelyn, I know you're not as innocent as you act. I know that you know we're hiding something from you so let's just cut all the 'oh I don't know what you're talking about' crap out. I can't tell you anything until I'm sure about a few things about you. And no, I will tell you what those things are either." Asher was getting annoyed now. I sighed. "Ok sure." I said, giving up. "What do you wanna know." "Do you remember now? How'd you die?" And there it was, the question I was dreading to face. I hesitated all of the sudden, goosebumps trailing down my spine and arms. "W-well... Not really." I answered. "Did you remember ANYTHING?" He asked again, emphasizing on 'anything'. "I know I died in Chicago, that's all I remember." Asher went silent. A look of disappointment washed his face. "Let's go." He said in a disappointed tone, turned on his heel and started walking towards the town square. This just made me more confused than ever. The way he acted was as if he didn't WANT me to remember anything. As more questions opened in my mind, I wanted to scream in frustration. But choose to ignore it once again and followed his to the town square.
I was shocked to see that the town was nothing different form a regular living one. The town square was surrounded by large building, two tunnels opening up on left and the right side. There was a white statue of a horse in the middle and a fountain was guarding the statue. A lot of people, or ghosts, were hustling here and there. "On the left side are things that smart Mortuus like, and by that I mean the library, a school for some reason and even some gaming shops. Also before you ask let me clear that we're still not in heavens so yes we need to take things from here. And yes everything is free and unlimited." Asher said. "On the right side there is everything you would need. A supermarket, clothing stores and all the good stuff. There's also a coffee shop around the corner that I love of go to." He continued walking towards the fountain. I silently nodded and followed. "Every day about 4 Mortuus enters Heavens. This happens at night during full moon. So technically the moon's always full here. The moonlight hits the water and opens a gateway through the statue. Only people who spent 50 years here can go inside, if you attempt it, you won't make it. Probably end up in hell, who knows. Anyways, there's no other way to get in Heavens." He explained. "That's pretty much it." "Wait really?" I asked shocked. "Told you, you won't find anything exciting here." Asher said monotonously. "These buildings though, they're museums. Every kind. If you wanna spend some time, you can come here." He added.
I walked behind him as he took me somewhere unknown. The only thing I noticed were the voices and the hustle disappearing until I realised we both were alone in an alleyway. "What are we doing here?" I asked panicking. "Don't worry I can't kill you, unfortunately." He said, making it a joke to clam me down. Asher sighed and knelled against a wall. "Look, Evelyn. I know you have a lot of questions and you're confused about a lot of things. But I've been here for only one month now so I don't really know everything. What I'm saying is, don't have expectations from me. I've just heard some things that I need to clear." "Oh wow, look at you being all sympathetic." I said my blood boiling at this point. "I know you're mad at me for not telling you anything but-" "But what, Asher? If you don't want to tell me anything, then why are you clearing that they're some secrets you're all hiding from me. If you wanna tell me, tell me the whole thing, don't just leave me hanging. I'm already so frustrated about literally everything. It's just been three days here and God is it a hell hole here already. No one's answering my questions and by each passing minute, instead of clearing things for me, you all are making it harder for me to bare." Asher just quitely listen to me. "It's gonna get more frustrating, Evelyn. But I'm just gonna say it, ok. The only thing I can tell you is that I think you're not suppose to be here."
"What do you mean."
"You're not suppose to be here, Evelyn."
