"You CAN escape, Eve."
I jolted up, my breath heavy and my body trembling. "W-who is it?" I looked around my dark room. Someone just whispered in my ear, but who? I somehow managed to get up, my shaky legs carrying me towards the light switch. I turned on the light and looked around. No one was there. I sighed. "There's no one there. It's just your imagination, Eve." I said to myself. I walked back to my bead and lied down again. I really wanted to sleep but now, I really couldn't. I shifted around my bed trying to sleep. Just. Sleep. "Argh!" I sat up once again, frustrated. Sighing, I turned on my side lamp and grabbed my book. "Guess I'll just read, then." I mumbled. 'You can escape, Eve.' These words ran across my mind every once a while, completely ruining the flow of the novel. I closed the book. Can I actually escape? Is there a possibility? "Eve." Someone called from outside. It was a whisper but loud enough for me to hear. "Who is it?"I whispered back. There was a silence for a hot moment. Then suddenly two voices started to whisper. Then three, four. It went on and on when I couldn't really tell how many whispers were there. They were having a talk, whispering to each other. Even though, I couldn't make out the words, it did sound important. Something told me that I should go and check. And I did. I got off once again and slowly tiptoed towards the door. I slowly turned the handle of my door and c***k opened the door. I peeked outside in complete darkness.
'Oh god, why am I like this? So curios. Why can't I just sleep?' A part of me asked. I don't really know, but there I was, tiptoeing towards the voices, a lamp in one of my hand and the other finding it's way through the darkness. The voices got louder and louder as I went downstairs. I tiptoed faster as the whispers got closer. That's when I realise, the voices weren't TALKING, heck, they were saying nothing. They were just..... whispering... gibberish. I walked further until I heard the voices whispering in my ear. I looked around, and to my horror, no one was there. My heart started to beat fast, so fast that I was afraid it might come out. My legs trembled and beads of cold sweat ran down my forehead. I stumbled back as I looked at the door with wide eyes. The DOOR was speaking. It was whispering. It was calling. Calling me towards it. ME. My mouth opened and I wanted to scream but nothing came out. The lamp dropped from the hand as I looked at the locked door. The forbidden door. The door that contained nothing but secrets. The door that was calling me and it was right in front of me. It.... started.... to... open..... by..... itself..... it creaked loudly as it did, a greenish blue light coming out of it. I started talking small steps with my shaky legs, completely ignoring the small fire I have started right behind me from the lamp. I walked forward, my hand on the door. As I was about to open it....
"Evelyn Avery!" I snapped out, yelped and turned around. "M-mrs-" and there she was, Mrs. Lincoln. Standing there, looking cross. "What are you doing here?" "I-I-" I looked at the door. It was closed. "Is that a fire! Oh my God!" Mrs. Kim joined in with a bucket of water. She threw the water on the fire and it went out "Evelyn! What nonsense is this?" "Th-the door. I-it opened.... a-and I heard whispers and...." I lost control over myself, sobbing, scared. I felt nothing but fear. "T-there was a l-light...." both women shared a glance. Mrs. Lincoln, without a word, turned on her heal and left. "Eve... it's okay.... it was just your imagination." "N-no. I-I swear... I-I know what I saw... please b-believe me..." I sobbed. "Evelyn, please handle yourself. You're just not over the fact that your dead." Aera said. "I-I wasn't hallucinating... Aera... please, believe me." I quietly said. She went silent. "Why don't you get some rest, okay?" I nodded as she lead me upstairs. She tucked me in. I was in a bad condition. "Good night, Eve." "G-good night."
I woke up the next morning with the sun screaming "WAKE UP SUCKER" on my face. God, I am NOT a morning person AT ALL. I yawned and sat up. My clock read 9 am. Meh. I dragged myself to take a shower. I washed my face and looked at myself in the mirror. Everything started to come back from last night. It sent shivers down my spine. I remembered the face Mrs. Lincoln gave when I told her about the door whispering and the light. I remember how she just walked away. Also the way Aera was dodging everything by saying they were "hallucinations". Something didn't feel right. Is that door haunted? Is that why they aren't allowing me, and everyone else, near it. But then again.....am I not dead? Do the dead get haunted? Confused I shook it off for now. I took a shower and threw on some casuals. And when I say casual, I mean a whole dang ass huge blue dress. THAT is casual. Why? You ask. Well, the rules here are like the rules of.... a castle. "Dressing is decency. It shows how decent you are when you dress. Wearing SHIRTS and and TROUSERS and what they call JEANS for girls! You should dress nicely, like a lady does." I remembered Mrs. Lincoln telling me. I tied my hair into a bun.
I went downstairs and once again was greeted by a delicious smell. Breakfast was laid on the table. Eggs, bacons with fresh loaf of bread, sausages sandwiches and oatmeal with a glass of orange juice. "Good morning." I greeted as I sat down with Grace once again. "Good morning, Eve." Everyone greeted back. "Where's Mrs. Lincoln?" I asked Grace. "Mother will be here in a moment. Mr. Roman and Mrs. Kim are in the kitchen if you need them." Grace replied. "Thank you." I smiled getting up. I wanted some answers from Mrs. Kim. I went inside the kitchen and greeted them. They did the same. "Umm.. Mrs. Kim?" "Oh please, Eve. You need to stop with all the formalities when it comes to us. It's Aura." I chuckled. "Okay, sorry, Aura." "Much better." She smiled. "Aura... uh... can I have a moment?" I asked. "Sure." She said looking at Roman and motioning him to leave. He did. "About last night-" "What about it?" She cut me off almost immediately. Weird. "You know....." "Oh did you not understand any of the rules? What do you need to ask?" "No, Aura." I sighed. "I mean the whole fire thing. The door whispered and-" "I'm sorry?" Aura looked at me with confusion. "Y-you don't remember?" I asked. "Eve.... you just have had a dream." She laughed. "But-" "I don't remember leaving my bed last night, Evelyn." Aura reassured. "O-oh I.... I'm sorry.... maybe I did have a dream.... it just felt so... real, you know." I dodged the question. I knew now they were hiding something but I was not so sure what. I laughed and shook my head. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to concern you." "It's okay, Evelyn. Nightmares are a normal thing for someone who dies recently." I nodded. "Okay, understood." "If you need to talk about something, you can always come to me." She smiled. "Ok, thank you." And with that, both of us joined the rest in the table and had a decent breakfast. Everyone ate quietly while my mind rushed with questions. "Did it even happen?" I paused for a moment at that thought. What if I WAS having some hallucinations? Maybe that's why I also heard the 'you can escape.' What if I am just traumatised by the fact that I am dead? I'm just not ready to accept the fact. I mentally sighed. You are such an i***t, making a fool of yourself. If that did happen, then the kids would've woken up from the amount of shouts. It was all a dream.
After breakfast, I was helping Aura with some chores. "Eve, will you mind fetching Grace a book from her shelf in her room? She is asking for one. See I'm doing a laundry right now and this kid just don't have any patience." She chuckled. "Sure." I said and made my way upstairs. While going up I peeked at the door. It seemed normal. I looked at the ground and nothing was burnt. The same old red floor. I went over to look around. So it was a dream. I mentally beat myself for my dumbness. While going back I tripped and fell. "Ow." How clumsy I am! I looked at the scratch on my knee when I.... saw.... that I made a small scratch on the floor where the paint got removed. Half of it was white half seemed.... black? I sat near the scratch and scratch more with my finger. There were marks. The floor was burnt.... I scratched more until a good piece of the paint was removed. I gasped and stood up. Staring at the floor.
What happened yesterday night...
It was all real.
The burnt marks were there on the floor....
There on the floor with the burnt marks of the fire that I set from the lamp.....
I got up and stared at the door and back at the floor. That's when reality hit me like a truck that I might get in trouble. Obviously, there's something strange going on that no one wants me to know. So, I rushed upstairs at Grace's room and fetched a book. On the shelf, I saw paints. I picked up a couple of shades of brown and rushed downstairs. No one was there. As I was on the last step, the brunt marks form this angle spelt something. Trying to read the letters, I gasped and everything fell from my hand.
