Cathy took a deep breath, preparing herself for this moment. “Yes, that’s correct,” she began. “After I got married and had my son, I decided to take a break from work to focus on raising him. It was a decision I made at the time because I wanted to be there for my family. But now that my son is older and my circumstances have changed, I’m eager to get back into the field. I know it’s been a long time, but I’ve stayed current with the latest developments in Speech-Language Pathology, and I’m confident that I can bring valuable skills and experience to this position.”
Dr. Meyers nodded, taking in Cathy’s explanation. “I appreciate your honesty, Cathy. I understand that stepping away from a career to focus on family is a significant decision. What steps have you taken to stay current with the field during your time away?”
Cathy was relieved that Dr. Meyers was giving her a chance to explain. “I’ve kept up with continuing education courses, attended workshops, and stayed in touch with colleagues who are still working in the field. I’ve also been reading the latest research and publications to make sure I’m up to date with the best practices and new techniques. I’m ready to hit the ground running.”
Dr. Meyers smiled. “That’s good to hear. Returning to work after a long break can be challenging, but it’s clear that you’re passionate about this field and dedicated to providing the best care for your clients. I’ll be honest, Cathy—your experience, even from ten years ago, is impressive. And the fact that you’ve kept yourself informed during your time away shows that you’re serious about making this transition.”
Cathy felt a wave of relief wash over her. “Thank you, Dr. Meyers. I’m very eager to get back to work and to make a positive impact here.”
After a few more questions, the interview came to an end. Dr. Meyers stood and shook Cathy’s hand. “We’ll be in touch soon, Cathy. Thank you for coming in.”
“Thank you for the opportunity,” Cathy replied, feeling a glimmer of hope as she left the clinic.
As she walked out into the bright afternoon sun, Cathy felt lighter than she had in weeks. The interview had gone better than she could have hoped, and while there were no guarantees, she had taken an important step toward rebuilding her life. Whatever happened next, she knew she had given it her best shot. And that was all she could do.
When she got home, Elijah was waiting for her at the door, his face lighting up when he saw her.
“How did it go, Mama?” he asked, his eyes wide with curiosity.
Cathy smiled and knelt down to hug him. “It went really well, sweetheart. Now we just have to wait and see.”
Elijah pulled back slightly and looked at her with a serious expression, one that made him seem older than his nine years. "Even if it doesn’t work out, there are other jobs, right? You just have to keep trying."
Cathy's heart swelled with pride. Elijah had a resilience that she admired so much. He had handled the changes in their lives with a maturity beyond his years, and his support meant the world to her.
"You're absolutely right," Cathy replied, giving him another squeeze. "I'll keep trying, no matter what."
Elijah grinned, reassured. "Can we celebrate now? Maybe with some pizza?"
Cathy laughed, a genuine sound that lifted her spirits. "Pizza sounds like the perfect way to celebrate. Let's go get some."
As they headed to the kitchen, Cathy couldn’t help but reflect on how much had changed in such a short amount of time. The divorce had been difficult, more painful than she could ever have imagined. Losing Rey—no matter how troubled their marriage had been—had left a void in her life. But more than anything, it had left her questioning her own strength.
But as she looked at Elijah, she realized that she was stronger than she had given herself credit for. She had made it through the divorce, she had taken steps to re-enter the workforce, and most importantly, she had maintained a loving and stable environment for her son.
As they sliced their favorite pizza and sat together at the kitchen table, Cathy felt a sense of peace that had been missing for a long time. The future was still uncertain, but she was no longer paralyzed by fear. She was moving forward, one step at a time, and she knew that whatever challenges lay ahead, she could face them.
"Mama?" Elijah said, breaking into her thoughts.
"Yes, sweetheart?" Cathy responded, looking up from her plate.
"If you’re going to work, we’ll still have time to do fun stuff together, right?"
Cathy smiled softly, reaching across the table to take his hand. "Of course we will. No matter what, you'll always be first. We'll make time for fun, I promise."
Elijah beamed, satisfied with her answer. "Yes! Because I still want to build that treehouse in the backyard this summer."
Cathy laughed, feeling lighter than she had in months. "I wouldn’t miss it for the world."
They finished their pizza, chatting about the treehouse and other plans for the summer. For the first time in a long while, Cathy felt optimistic about the future. The job interview had gone well, all she had to do was to wait.
Later that evening, after Elijah had gone to bed, Cathy sat down at her computer to check her emails. As she scrolled through the messages, she noticed one from the Hamilton Speech and Language Clinic. Her heart skipped a beat as she clicked on it, her hands trembling slightly.
The email was from Dr. Meyers, thanking her again for coming in for the interview. But as Cathy read further, she saw the words she had been hoping for: "We would like to offer you the position of Speech-Language Pathologist at our clinic."
Cathy let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. Relief, excitement, and gratitude all washed over her at once. She had done it. She had found a way to start over, to reclaim a part of her life that she thought was lost forever.
She quickly typed out a reply, accepting the offer with a smile on her face. When she hit "Send," she leaned back in her chair, feeling a sense of accomplishment that she hadn’t felt in years.
As she turned off the computer and headed to bed, Cathy felt lighter, more hopeful. The future was still uncertain, but for the first time in a long time, she felt like she was in control of her own destiny. And with Elijah by her side, she knew that everything was going to be okay.
