First impressions

While the sky turned from dusk to twilight I waited. I waited hoping that this meeting would go well and that I wouldn’t be judged too harshly. Being a vampire certainly comes with a lot of bad misrepresentation. But I remind myself I was human once I slightly remember what it was to feel all kinds of emotions like fear and empathy and so that’s why I turned away from the coven and their ongoing obsession with feeding off humans as if it provides them with greater power. All it ever did for me was make me feel ever the monster right out of some human horror movie. I detested feeding off humans and whenever I expressed the self loathing I’d feel after a feed my maker would only laugh at me calling me his worst creation and a damn disappointment. Why eat only salad when you can have steak? He’d ask. So in his eyes I was the vegan disappointment and after I came to terms with that is when I really began to withdraw from him and all of their ways. Shaking my head from these depressing thoughts I brought myself back to the present. Ahh present! I forgot it’s proper manners to give a gift when being introduced to the veil of the fairies. I checked on my person and besides the squirrel I fed on earlier the only other possession I had was my gold ring. It was something I wore when I was still human I think it was my mother’s? Either way I’ve always worn it never taken it off until now I ever slightly slipped it off my finger and held it preciously in my hand. It was custom and yet I worried for a moment that it was all wrong. What if they were offended? What if they don’t like it or worse don’t like me? I began to spiral and therefore began to pace around worrying over what they might say upon meeting a vampire. I clenched the ring tightly in my fist and started to stew in a storm. I was so far gone in my social anxiety panic attack I almost didn’t hear her but then her scent caught me and I immediately stopped thinking. I inhaled the sweet intoxicating smell that was her and closed my eyes. Heaven or is it my hell?At the moment I don’t care as She comes closer I can breathe her in. “Alex?” She calls to me. I open my eyes to find her right in front of my nose peering at me with those piercing green eyes. I melt into myself feeling all my worries vanish. I just stare back and think she really is the most exhilarating creature I’ve ever met. She’s saying something more but can’t quite comprehend what it is she’s saying when suddenly she flies backwards and gestures towards the ground. It’s then that I’m brought back to earth and the magnitude with what we are doing. Sheepishly I grin and look around. In the darkening forest little specks of light danced all around me as the fae begin their cautious approach to me. Out of the rose bushes more and more wings fluttering all around me. And down where she flew at the base of the tree there I saw the fairy king and his court. Nervous was an understatement by far as I had never encountered such wonder. All the fae joined around me and all being so beautiful I was rendered speechless. The royal court came right to my feet and not wanting to be rude I decided to crouch down to meet their eye level. His majesty with his silver robes and blue hat looked very fine and although in good health walked with a cane. Astrid came to stand beside him then. “Welcome sir! Welcome to the veil of the rose line. This is our home and we welcome you most graciously” father Braum said while motioning for others to come closer. I was filled with immediate gratitude for surely there could be no objections if the king himself approved. “Thank you very much. It’s an absolute privilege and honor to meet you all of you.” I looked up and around as I said this “ and per custom I offer you a token to show I come in friendship and support. It’s not much but of my finest possessions this is all I own.” I finished while presenting the ring to Astrid and her father. She looked at me in awe and I found myself falling for her again. His majesty looked very pleased as he motioned for two others to come forward and help carry the ring. “That is very kind of you. We thank you for keeping tradition and we hope you will join us in celebration. Our golden time has begun and I can’t think of no other way to get better acquainted than with some good merriment” he claps his hands and blows his whistle at this. And I’m glad it’s going so well. Astrid is looking at me with eyes shining brightly and proudly and I can feel a kind of warmth spread through me. “Let us begin with a toast. Bring on the wine! A toast with love comes wonder and what a wonderful surprise this is! Let us share in this great new friendship and let us begin with the best intentions. For true heart remains to be seen” I was offered a small glass of their honey wine and though was only a tiny drop for me it was the gesture more than anything that truly touched me. I took out my own flask I keep on me and drank from it and raised it in a like toast “ to new friends. May we find comfort into the winter together as one and survive together and blossom when springs brings us a new beginning” at this some of them shouted hooray. Others merely clapped. All at once music began and with it came much more. There was dancing and laughter and everyone seemed so lively. It truly felt like I was in a different place and time in this magical little world. Time stood still and yet at the same time it drew on and on. Carrying with it the hope of the start of something new.
