CHAPTER 7 Tracked by The Williams Group

MORGAN After scouting some stuff from the library, I went home to check the details that Butterfly sent me. I have all my tools at home, and I needed those to work without leaving traces. While on my way to my room, I was already checking the encrypted email that Butterfly sent me. It seems like an underground company that operates in the black market is trying to hack the security system of Williams Consortium, but it was too secured and they couldn't get in. They needed me to hack their system and get all the confidential information inside. I frowned upon reading the name of the company. It rings a bell, but I couldn't figure out what it was. As I entered the house, I found Emma and Jessica waiting in the living room. I immediately rolled my eyes after letting out a few sighs. "Here we go again," I murmured. "Morgan, you've finally made it into Wyatt International School. I hope you won't stir up any trouble. You're in the same school as Emma now. If you need help with anything, don't hesitate to ask Emma." That was the fakest smile I have ever had since I met her. I don't know what she's up to, but I'm not buying it. "Mom, don't worry, I'll watch over Morgan and ensure she doesn't repeat her past mistakes." Five years ago, Emma could easily tarnish my reputation with rumors. But I won't let that happen again. "Could you two please stop with this charade? My life is my business, and it has nothing to do with you. If you enjoy acting so much, why don't you become an actor?" After I spoke, she ascended the stairs without acknowledging the two of them. "Did you see her attitude? She acts like she's achieved something great. She still hasn't learned to show remorse." I heard Jessica fumed as I made my way to the stairs. While Emma inwardly sneered, she maintained a composed facade. "Mom, don't be upset. You still have me, and I won't disappoint you." "Yes! Thankfully, you've never let me down. Emma, you're aware of the current situation in our Brown family. You can't let me down." Ignoring the commotion downstairs, I returned to my room and retrieved my computer. Upon powering it on, the computer appeared quite ordinary. Yet, its boot speed surpassed those of the leading brands in the market. The computer's interface resembled that of a standard device. I sat on my bed, placed the computer on my lap, and swiftly input a string of code using the keyboard. In under a minute of battling with their system's security, I deciphered the situation. "That was easy. They need to do better than this. I can hack their system even with my eyes closed," I murmured. The Williams Consortium security system wasn't that impressive. My fingers danced across the keyboard, generating code on the computer screen. As soon as they detected my presence, they quickly added an impenetrable firewall to their system. Impenetrable to others, but not to me. It took me a good amount of time before I finally cracked their system. The files soon came pouring down, and I immediately downloaded every bit of it. I'm sure that whoever is working on the other side is clearly having a headache. It's not my problem that they weren't reliable at their job. Once I'm done, I quickly transmit the data to Butterfly, deftly inputting a series of lines of code to eliminate any digital footprints, and then I power down my computer. Just as the computer screen went dark, Butterfly's incoming call illuminated my phone. "I had confidence that once you took action, everything would go smoothly, but I didn't anticipate you snatching confidential documents so swiftly. You truly are a legend. There's no one in the world who can replicate your prowess." Unfazed by the praise, I replied, "If there's nothing else, I'll end the call." Such flattery no longer affected me. I have been doing this job for far too long. "I understand. The funds will be transferred to your previous account, correct?" "Yep." Before Butterfly could delve into further details, I terminated the call. Upon completing the task, Rachel settled onto the bed and indulged in a round of gaming. A knock interrupted my leisure, prompting me to rise and open the door. "Morgan, it's me." Henry's familiar voice reached my ears. I opened the door widely and invited him in. "Grandpa, what's the matter?" I assisted him into my room, a gesture of concern etched across my face. "I know I'm in no position to ask you about these things. But it would be nice if you told me about what happened five years ago. You're my granddaughter, and I want those who committed wrongs against you to face consequences." "Grandpa, you don't need to worry about this," I reassured him. Why should my elderly grandfather concern himself with past grievances? "Just take care of your health; that's enough." "I know you've suffered unjustly. I wasn't home five years ago and couldn't protect you. But now that I'm here, no one can mistreat you. Focus on your studies and let go of other concerns." Handing her a card, he continued, "Take this. If you need anything, buy it for yourself. If the funds run short, I'll provide more. Just don't sacrifice your well-being, alright?" It seems like my grandfather wanted to compensate for all the shortcomings that he had with me during his absence. The warmth of such familial care that I haven't felt for too long tugged at my emotions. Even someone as resilient as me felt a slight tightness in my throat. It still feels nice knowing that after all that I've suffered, someone still cares for me. "Thank you, Grandpa." I expressed my gratitude, unable to decline my grandfather's genuine kindness. I spent my whole afternoon reading business books, just like my grandfather wanted. But in the middle of my reading, I received another call from Butterfly. I secured a quiet and secret spot in the mansion before I answered her call. "Shadow, have you provoked someone recently?" "When will I ever stop provoking someone?" I retorted. It seemed provocation was inevitable, no matter her intentions. "It seems like you did manage to leave a trace this time. The Williams Group is tracking you. They're investigating you," Butterfly cautioned. Nothing escaped the scrutiny of Wings of Light. "The Williams Consortium? Noted," I replied, seemingly unfazed. "They can search all they want. But they wouldn't find any." "Be cautious; the Williams Consortium is not to be trifled with. In all of New York, no consortium can rival them." "Butterfly, I think you should have told me that before giving me this job. It's too late for that, I suppose. But nevertheless, they can track me however they want. Let's see how good his people are," I said confidently. Before I hang up the phone, I leave Butterfly a message. "Don't reach out to me for a while." "What's going on? Is something seriously wrong? There are tasks only you can handle!" she replied in surprise. "Everything's fine. I just need to handle a few things." "You're not thinking of leaving the Wings of Light, right? That's not an option, I won't accept it." I couldn't suppress a smile. "Butterfly, I'm not Wings of Light. It's just that I have other commitments keeping me busy, and I prefer not to take on any new assignments. No matter who it is or how lucrative the offer, just turn it down!" "What's going on? If you're struggling, you can confide in me. Every member of the Wings of Light can help you find a solution. We're a talented group, and we can handle any challenge you face." "As I said, It's fine." I didn't want to prolong the conversation and ended the call abruptly. Butterfly understood Shadow's temperament. Whenever I chose not to divulge details, no amount of pressing would yield results. Butterfly also trusted that the Phantom Shadow could resolve any issue. ******************
