Tom took a deep breath, trying to process everything that had happened since the unexpected guest had entered his life. He closed his laptop and glanced over at the small droid recharging in the corner. With a gentle wave, he motioned for it to come closer. "I remember you have a caregiving module. Though you're an old model and can't do much else, those basic functionalities should still work."
The droid acknowledged with a slight nod, eager to prove its usefulness. "When I'm at work, I need you to keep an eye on him. Make sure he doesn't kick off the blanket or fall off the couch. If anything urgent happens, contact me immediately, okay?"
The droid saluted with a somewhat clunky move, clearly taking its new responsibilities to heart. "Mission accepted!"
Tom chuckled, giving the droid a fond tap on its metallic head. "Good."
As evening settled in, the small robot sent a message to Tom, asking about dinner plans. Receiving instructions, it busied itself with preparations. While intricate cooking wasn't its forte, it could manage simple tasks like washing vegetables and preparing ingredients for soups or stews.
In the dim living room, Tom's guest remained asleep on the couch. Compared to a stray puppy that might have caused chaos, the patient was a model of tranquility.
Tom tidied up the remnants of the day—putting away the groceries he'd bought and organizing the medication from the hospital so that everything would be easily accessible. Exhaustion tugged at his limbs, but a dull satisfaction accompanied the day's end.
With a tired sigh, he took a moment to look around. The softly humming heating system created a cocoon of warmth in the otherwise brisk evening. Resting his head back, Tom allowed himself a rare moment of peace amid the chaos of adapting to this unexpected twist in his life. Little did he know that the calm was but a prelude to the challenges still to come.
