Chapter 13 – In the Space Between

721 Words
The moon hung low above Valcryn Palace, a sliver of silver fire carving the sky. Inside the west tower, Aurelia paced her chamber like a storm waiting for release. The sabotage had worked. Word was spreading. The Seer had collapsed in the Temple Wing, her power faltering, her sacred basin shattered like glass under heat. But none of that quieted the tremble in her chest. Because she knew he would come. And Kaelen never came without consequence. She didn’t have to wait long. The door creaked open—and there he was. No guards. No armor. No crown. Just him. Kaelen Drayke, Alpha King, looking like a man torn in two. She turned sharply, arms folded. “Come to scold me for stealing your rebellion?” His lips twitched. “I didn’t come to scold you.” “Then what?” “I came to see if you’re still alive.” “You’re a little late for concern.” He stepped inside, closed the door behind him, and leaned against it. Silence stretched between them. Not awkward. Not hostile. Just heavy. Aurelia finally asked, “You knew.” He nodded once. “The moment the flames went out in the Seer’s chamber, I felt it. Your mark burned across the castle.” “And you didn’t stop me.” “I didn’t want to.” She blinked. “I stood before the council today,” Kaelen said quietly. “Told them the truth. Told her I’d rather burn the throne than see you sacrificed.” Aurelia’s breath hitched. “And they let you live?” “Barely. But they’ll think twice before crossing me again.” She turned her back to him, staring out the window. “You waited too long,” she said. “You should’ve stood with me sooner.” “I was trying to protect the kingdom.” “And I’m trying to protect myself.” A beat. “I know,” he said softly. She turned back around, her eyes blazing. “You knew what they did to Lyra. You knew what they planned for me. And you still watched me walk into that court alone.” Kaelen looked down, shame flickering across his face. “I’m not asking for forgiveness,” he said. “I came because I need you to hear this.” He stepped closer. Close enough that she could see the storm in his eyes. “I never expected to care for you. I chose you because the Seer said you were the key. But somewhere along the way… you became more than that.” Her heart ached. “Don’t say it.” “I will.” He took another step. “You became everything.” Aurelia shook her head. “You say that now. But when the time comes—when the prophecy asks for blood—will you still choose me?” He raised his hand, slowly, carefully, and brushed his fingers along her cheek. “I already did.” Aurelia swallowed, her voice barely a whisper. “Then show me.” He leaned in—and for a second, everything stilled. The castle. The war. The prophecy. None of it mattered. Only this moment. Only them. When his lips met hers, it was not soft. It was not gentle. It was fire. It was fury. It was every betrayal, every buried hope, every unspoken promise—exploding into one stolen kiss beneath a dying moon. And when they broke apart, breathless, trembling, Aurelia looked into his eyes and knew— This bond wasn’t destiny. It was choice. And it was dangerous. Because now, they had something to lose. --- Far beneath the palace, the Seer lay on cold stone, her hands burned where power once bloomed. The basin was broken. The vision fogged. But one truth remained. > If the girl lives, the crown will fall. And if the Alpha loves her… he will fall with it. --- Later that night, Aurelia lay in bed, fingers resting on the silver thread still tied around her wrist. Kaelen was gone—vanished like a shadow—but something had changed. Not just between them. In her. She no longer felt like a pawn on the board. She felt like the queen. And she was ready to make her next move. ---
