The Vampire’s Estate

The carriage moved silently through the dark forest. Elena sat in the far corner, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. She had barely spoken since leaving the auction. She didn't know where Adrian was taking her. She didn't know what he wanted from her. And that frightened her more than anything. Across from her, Adrian sat comfortably, one arm resting against the side of the carriage. His crimson eyes occasionally settled on her. Every time they did, Elena looked away. She could feel his gaze even when she wasn't looking at him. For several minutes, neither of them spoke. Then Adrian broke the silence. “What is your name?” Elena looked up. She hadn't expected the question. “My... name?” His eyebrow lifted slightly. “I believe that's what I asked.” She hesitated. There was no reason to hide it, but something about telling him felt strangely intimate. “Elena.” “Just Elena?” She nodded. Adrian studied her for a moment. “Elena.” He said her name slowly, as though testing how it sounded. She lowered her eyes again. “And you?” she asked quietly. A faint smile appeared on his face. “You don't know?” “I know you're a vampire.” “That wasn't what I asked.” Elena looked at him. “You're the one who bought me.” “Indeed.” She waited. He seemed to enjoy making her wait. Eventually, he said, “Adrian.” Elena nodded. “Adrian.” Something about hearing her say his name made his expression change for the briefest moment. Then the familiar amusement returned. “Much better.” She didn't understand. “What?” “Nothing.” Elena looked away. She was beginning to realize that Adrian enjoyed making people confused. She decided it was safer not to ask. The carriage continued deeper into the forest. Elena stared through the window. There were no houses. No lights. Nothing except endless trees. Her stomach tightened. “Where are you taking me?” “My estate.” She swallowed. “How far?” “Not much farther.” She nodded. Silence returned. After a while, Adrian spoke again. “You're very quiet.” Elena glanced at him. She wasn't sure whether that was a complaint. “I don't know what to say.” “That's a first.” She frowned slightly. “What do you mean?” “You looked much more talkative at the auction.” Elena immediately lowered her gaze. She remembered how she'd stared at him. How she'd answered his questions. How she'd accidentally challenged him. She had been terrified then too. But now that they were alone, the fear felt heavier. “I was frightened,” she admitted softly. Adrian's expression became unreadable. “And now?” Elena hesitated. “I'm more frightened.” A quiet laugh escaped him. Not cruel. Almost amused. “At least you're honest.” She looked at him cautiously. He wasn't angry. That surprised her. She expected a vampire who had purchased a human slave to be cruel. Yet Adrian hadn't touched her. He hadn't threatened her. He hadn't even raised his voice. That didn't mean she trusted him. Not even close. She still didn't know what he wanted. And she wasn't going to forget what he was. Eventually, the carriage slowed. Elena looked through the window. Two enormous iron gates stood ahead. They opened slowly as the carriage approached. Beyond them was a vast estate hidden among the trees. A magnificent mansion stood in the distance. Its dark stone walls rose several stories high, with tall windows glowing faintly against the night. Elena stared. She had never seen anything like it. The carriage stopped in front of the entrance. Adrian stepped out first. He turned toward her. “Come.” Elena hesitated. Adrian didn't reach for her. He simply waited. After a few seconds, she carefully stepped down. The mansion seemed even larger from the ground. Elena instinctively moved closer to the carriage. Adrian noticed. “You look as though you're considering running.” Her heart skipped. “I wasn't.” “You thought about it.” She didn't answer. His lips curved. “Don't worry. If you run, I'll catch you.” Elena's face paled. Adrian paused. Then he added casually, “That was a joke.” She stared at him. He looked completely serious. “You're not very funny.” “I disagree.” Elena quickly followed him toward the mansion. Behind her, she heard his quiet laugh. The enormous doors opened. A group of servants stood inside. The moment Adrian entered, every one of them bowed. “My lord.” Adrian gave a small nod. Then he looked toward Elena. “This is Elena.” Several servants glanced at her curiously. One of them looked surprised. Another looked uncomfortable. A woman stepped forward. “My lord, where should she—” “Give her a room.” The woman bowed. “Yes, my lord.” Adrian turned to Elena. “You'll be shown upstairs.” Elena nodded. She was about to follow the woman when Adrian spoke again. “Elena.” She stopped. She slowly turned. His red eyes met hers. “You don't need to be afraid of every person in this house.” She looked at him for a moment. Then quietly replied, “I don't know who I should be afraid of.” Adrian stared at her. For once, he didn't have a teasing response. Then his lips curved slightly. “Fair enough.” He walked away. Elena watched him disappear down the corridor. Something about him confused her. He frightened her. But he didn't seem interested in hurting her. At least, not yet. And that uncertainty frightened her even more. The servant led Elena upstairs. Her room was enormous. A large bed stood against one wall, covered with thick blankets. There was a fireplace, a wardrobe, a small table, and a large window overlooking the grounds. Several dresses had already been placed neatly on the bed. Elena stared at them. “Those are for you,” the servant said. Elena nodded. “Thank you.” The woman looked surprised that she had thanked her. Then she said, “Lord Adrian doesn't usually bring humans here.” Elena looked at her. “Why did he bring me?” The servant hesitated. “I don't know.” That answer didn't help. “Is he cruel?” The woman became very still. Then she lowered her voice. “Lord Adrian is... difficult to understand.” Elena's chest tightened. “That isn't an answer.” “It is the only one I can give.” The woman walked toward the door. “Get some rest.” The door closed behind her. Elena was alone. She sat on the edge of the bed. For the first time since leaving the auction, she allowed herself to cry. She covered her mouth so nobody would hear. She missed Noah. She missed her old room. She missed the sound of her mother's voice. Even though her parents had sold her, a part of her still wanted to believe they had loved her. But perhaps that was foolish. She wiped her tears. She couldn't change what had happened. She had to survive. That was all. Elena eventually changed into one of the dresses and climbed into bed. But sleep refused to come. Every sound outside made her tense. Footsteps. Doors opening. Distant voices. She pulled the blanket closer. Then she heard something outside her room. Footsteps stopped directly outside her door. Elena froze. The handle moved. Her heart slammed against her chest. The door opened slightly. A familiar pair of crimson eyes appeared through the gap. Adrian. Elena sat upright. He looked at her for a moment. “Still awake?” She nodded. He stepped inside. Elena instinctively moved backward. Adrian noticed. He stopped. “I only came to check whether you were comfortable.” She stared at him. “Why?” He tilted his head. “Because you're my responsibility now.” Elena didn't know what to say. Adrian glanced around the room. “Everything you need is here.” She nodded. He turned toward the door. Then paused. “Try to sleep, Elena.” He looked back at her. “And don't worry.” His lips curved into a small, teasing smile. “I don't bite my guests.” Elena's eyes widened. “You're a vampire.” “I know.” “You drink blood.” “Also true.” “Then that's not reassuring.” Adrian chuckled. “I suppose I'll have to work on that.” He left before she could respond. The door closed. Elena stared at it. For the first time that night, despite her fear, the smallest smile touched her lips. She quickly wiped it away. “No,” she whispered to herself. She couldn't start trusting him. Not yet. She knew nothing about Adrian. And somewhere deep within the walls of his ancient estate, there were secrets she had yet to discover. Secrets about Adrian. Secrets about herself. And a mysterious connection neither of them understood yet. For now, Elena only knew one thing. She was trapped in a vampire's world. And she had no idea what awaited her.
