Major Ziegler and Sergeant Bayer had methodically moved through the train car, questioning all women, and examining their baggage. The first car was half-filled with nurses, and their investigation took almost an hour. Each succeeding car had fewer women, and they moved quicker, knowing some of those they questioned had little resemblance to the blonde they sought—either older or a different build. They didn’t rule out hair color—hair dye and wigs could be used effectively. The train was closer to Paris, much of its journey completed, when Sergeant Bayer opened the connecting door into the last car, and Major Ziegler stepped through.
