CHAPTER 86 The following morning, Major Ziegler borrowed two soldiers from Colonel von Horn. They left headquarters just after dawn, the staff car followed by a motorcycle with a sidecar, a machine g*n poised and ready. “I don’t see anything yet,” Ziegler said. He sat in the back seat with field glasses trained on the River Scheldt as it wound south. Bayer drove along the banks. “You don’t think they would go north, do you, sir?” “Why go north if Paris is their destination?” “They’re not taking a boat the entire route,” Bayer said. “They’re only meeting someone to aid their escape.” “They could be anywhere then,” Ziegler muttered. “Maybe they plan to hide at a farm along the river. Or meet an accomplice with a vehicle.” “If we don’t find them going south, we can always check north.”
