Emilie entered Louie Bassett’s parlor. “I’m sorry to barge in on you,” she said. “But Guy Barbier came to visit Jacques this morning. I think it was important.”
He sat beside her, anxious for information. “What did they say?”
“I couldn’t hear their entire conversation. Only a few scattered words. I had to be careful. Jacques caught me eavesdropping the last time Barbier came.”
“No, you can’t take any risks,” Louie agreed. “Especially now that the Germans control the city. Jacques is too unpredictable. He’s cornered.”
“He avoids going to his office. He said the Germans are taking over administration.”
“They are. I’m sure he finds it more difficult every day to pose as a civil servant.”
“If that’s what he’s doing,” she said. “He reveals nothing. I learn more about him from
