CHAPTER 55 The Parisian warehouse was reached through an alley barely wide enough for wagons and trucks. Broad double doors marked the vehicle entrance, enclosed by gates of wire mesh, dented and scratched from years of use. A few feet away, a steel personnel entry had no windows, the paint scuffed, a dent near the bottom of the door. The brick building had narrow windows along the top, offering privacy but allowing light to filter in. The front, which faced a street that intersected the Boulevard St. Germain, was home to a rare coin dealer—open by appointment only. Normally dark, the interior was barely visible through dirty display windows. Jacques Dufort came early, not long after dawn. The Germans would soon swarm the city, parading down boulevards to intimidate those who hadn’t fled
