CHAPTER 69 It was after dusk when Lucien heard the secret door open. He looked at Camille, eyebrows arched. She held a finger to her lips. She reached in her satchel and removed the pistol she had taken from Lucien’s safe. “Wait here,” she hissed. She went to the top of the stairs, but then lowered the g*n. Mme. Abadie came up the steps, holding a tray. “Some baguettes and a bottle of wine.” Lucien went to the stairs and took the tray from her. “I’ll close the door,” Mme. Abadie said. She went down the steps, grabbed a wooden lever and pulled, closing the door. She then came back and joined Lucien and Camille, sitting on the wooden chairs next to the chimney. “Thank you for the meal,” Lucien said, biting into the ham and cheese baguette. “It’s all I could get on such short notice.”
