“Why would the Gestapo call me when they wanted you?” Emilie asked Jacques the following morning before she left to open the store. Jacques shrugged and turned the page of his newspaper. “It was just a mistake.” “Why would they even want to talk to you?” “It must have been about the railroads,” he said. “I’m listed in the civil service directory as a railroad consultant.
