The Space Between Truth And Denial

810 Words
The next day, I made a decision. A simple one. I was going to act normal. No overthinking. No paying attention to whispers. No analyzing every word Amir said like it had a hidden meaning. Just… normal. And for the first few hours, it worked. Lectures came and went. No strange looks. No obvious gossip. It almost felt like yesterday had been exaggerated in my head. Almost. Until I stepped into the cafeteria. Conversations didn’t stop this time. They didn’t need to. Because now… people weren’t hiding it. I heard my name. Clear. Followed by his. Amir Bello. I froze for half a second. Then kept walking like I didn’t hear anything. Because reacting would only make it worse. Right? “Amira.” I turned. And of course— There he was. Leaning casually against one of the pillars like he hadn’t just become the center of every conversation in the room. “You’re avoiding the library,” he said. Straight to the point. I crossed my arms slightly. “Or maybe I’m just busy.” “You’re not,” he replied. I blinked. “You don’t know that.” “I do.” That confidence again. Annoying. Unshakable. “Why do you care?” I asked before I could stop myself. A pause. Not long. But enough to feel intentional. “Because the work isn’t done,” he said. Of course. The work. Always the safe answer. I nodded slowly. “Then we can finish it later.” He studied me for a moment. Then pushed off the pillar and stepped closer. Not too close. But enough that I had to actually look at him—not just glance and look away. “This isn’t about the assignment,” he said quietly. My heart did something I refused to acknowledge. “Yes, it is,” I replied quickly. “It was,” he corrected. That made me frown. “What is that supposed to mean?” “It means,” he said, “you’re trying to create distance.” “I’m not.” “You are.” The way he said it—calm, certain—made it worse. “I’m just being careful,” I said. “Careful of what?” he asked. I hesitated. Then said it. “People.” For the first time, something in his expression hardened slightly. “People don’t decide your actions,” he said. “Easy for you to say,” I shot back. “You’re not the one being talked about.” A small pause. Then— “I am,” he said. That stopped me. “What?” “I’ve always been,” he added. And suddenly… that made sense. The rumors. The warnings. Zainab’s voice echoing in my head. He’s dangerous… in his own way. I looked at him differently then. Not softer. Not kinder. Just… more aware. “So you’re used to it,” I said. “Yes.” “And I’m not.” Another pause. Then he said something quieter this time. “Then don’t get used to it.” That confused me. “What does that mean?” “It means,” he said, “if it bothers you… step away.” There it was. Clear. Simple. A way out. So why didn’t I take it? “Is that what you want?” I asked. And for the first time— He didn’t answer immediately. His gaze held mine. Steady. But not unreadable anymore. Something was there. Something real. “I want,” he said slowly, “to finish what we started.” My chest tightened slightly. “That sounds like the assignment again.” “It’s not,” he said. Silence stretched between us. Loud. Uncomfortable. Honest. And then— I broke it. “Fine,” I said. “Library. Today. After lectures.” A small nod. “Good.” He turned like that settled everything. Like this conversation hadn’t just… changed something. “Amir,” I called. He stopped but didn’t turn immediately. Then slowly looked back. “Yes?” I hesitated. Then asked the one thing I probably shouldn’t have. “Why do people say you’re dangerous?” A beat. Then another. And when he finally answered— It wasn’t defensive. It wasn’t angry. It was calm. Too calm. “Because I don’t pretend,” he said. That didn’t sound dangerous. If anything… it sounded honest. But something about the way he said it— Made it feel like a warning. Later that evening, as I walked toward the library… I realized something I hadn’t wanted to admit. This wasn’t just about rumors anymore. And it definitely wasn’t just about an assignment. It was about choices. The kind you don’t fully understand until you’ve already made them. And somehow… I had a feeling I was already making the wrong one. To be continued…
