Adela
Ronan stared at me in disbelief, then his fingers tightened around my throat until I was sure he would crush my windpipe.
“So this is revenge?” He spat. “You let another man touch you, f**k you, just to hurt me? You're pathetic Adela!”
I refused to flinch, even though he choked me harder.
“Yes, you deserve it. You've been nothing but cruel to me Ronan. What you feel last night? I have felt it every day for the past two years!”
His grip loosened just enough for me to breathe, but the anger in his eyes burned hotter.
“How dare you?” He hissed. “A barren woman like you? What made you think you got to punish me?”
The insult hit me harder than any slap.
“You expect me to keep wasting my seed on an empty vessel?” Ronan laughed cruelly. “Two years, Adela. Two years, and not once have you given me an heir. Do you know what that makes me look like to my pack? I look weak and cursed. I might as well spread my sperm around and find myself an heir, yes?”
I sniffed, unable to fight the tears. “Is that what I am to you now? Just a womb that failed you?”
He sneered. “If it's any consolation you were also a stepping stone. I needed Luna to become Alpha, and you were convenient.”
“You…” My voice cracked. “You used me? That's all I am to you?”
“I made you Luna,” he snapped. “You should be grateful.”
“Grateful?” My voice rose. “For two years you have humiliated me, brought whores into my home, into our bed. And now you think I should thank you?”
He shrugged. “Yes. I finally got an heir.”
“Your maid has given me what you couldn’t,” he said.
“She’s one month pregnant now and she doesn't make as much fuss as you do,”
I didn't register the words at first until my wolf howled in pain.
Sela was pregnant with my mate. Sela, my personal maid.
“W-What?”
“She’s carrying my heir,” he continued smugly. “I only f****d her four times, and she conceived. That’s what a real Luna should be able to do.”
“No…” I shook my head because the room was spinning. “You're… you can't be serious.”
“Hi Alpha, I got the fruits… oh,” Sela strutted in, looking rather proud of herself. “The cheating Luna is back. Do you know how much pain you caused the Alpha?”
Oh God no, I had to be dreaming. This was not real.
She moved closer to Ronan, curling her hand over his forearm.
“Alpha,” she purred, “instead of wasting your breath on her, you should punish her for cheating on you.”
My wolf roared inside me, thrashing in my chest. That little Omega b***h! Ronan nodded.
“You’re right, Guards!” Two guards walked in immediately. Ronan gestured at me. “Take her to the dungeon.”
“You can’t!” I shouted as the guards seized me. “I am Luna!”
“I am the Alpha,” Ronan said coldly. “And if I say you are nothing, then you f*****g are, Adela! Take her away.”
I screamed all the way to the dungeon, sobbing in pain and horror at what had just happened. Sela was pregnant. Sela was carrying my husband's heir. I would lose my mate at this rate. They threw me into the filthy cell, and the door slammed shut behind me.
The first night, I wept until my throat was raw. The second night, I sat in silence, feeling too hollow to even cry. By the third day, when the door opened and Ronan stepped in, I was mad because of anxiety. I won't lose my mate. I will not!
He stood over me like a king looking down on a beggar.
“I’ve decided,” he said coldly. “I want a divorce.”
I pushed myself up on shaking arms. “What?”
“You’ll sign the papers,” he said simply, “and I’ll make Sela, Luna. She deserves the title you’ve wasted.”
I got to my feet, feeling angry again.
“No.”
His eyebrows shot up. “No?”
“You think I’ll just hand her my title?” I spat. “My maid? I will never hand over my seat as Luna. Never. If you want to disgrace me, you’ll have to drag me before the council. And even then, I will fight you, Ronan.”
His jaw flexed. “You think they’ll side with you after they learn you cheated on me?”
I laughed bitterly. “You mean after they learn I just did to you what you’ve been doing to me for two years? The elders know how many women you’ve f****d, Ronan. They know how you’ve shamed me. And we both know they will not believe you.”
He grabbed me then, fingers biting into my arms.
“Don’t you get it?” he snarled. “I don’t want you anymore, Adela. I want you gone. You have no use for me anymore.”
The words gutted me. This was my mate. My husband. The man who had been my best friend long before we found out we were even mated. The man who had sworn he would love me even if we never had children.
“Please,” I whispered, throwing pride away. I would beg and grovel if I had to. “You know what my family is like. I have nowhere else to go. Don’t reject me, Ronan. Don’t throw me away, please. I’ll raise the child as my own. After she gives birth, send her away, we’ll pay her off, but let me keep my place by your side.”
He laughed, looking at me in disgust. “You’re pathetic. I can't believe you are begging me to let you raise the child I have with your maid. No, Adela. You will rot here until you change your mind.”
Then he turned and left me in the dark dungeon, hopeless. God how low have I sunk? I was begging to raise my husband's bastard.
I remained there for a month. Every time he came back with the papers, I refused and fought. My body weakened, my hair dulled, but my anger and desperation kept me alive.
Then one morning, the nausea hit so hard I barely made it to the corner before vomiting all I had in me.
At first, I thought it was because of how I have been starving just to make Ronan change his mind or the dirty dungeon made me sick. But when the doctor came to check on me, he smiled.
“Congratulations, Luna,” he said. “You’re pregnant.”
The world tilted under me.
“What?”
“You’re pregnant,”
My mind spun. Ronan hadn’t touched me in over six months.
Which meant… Oh no. My hand flew to my stomach. The stranger. The man from the club. The cheating bastard! I was pregnant with his child. I gritted my teeth in anger. I hated him with every fiber of my body for what he did to me. Men, they were all the same, cheating lying bastards!
“I should inform the Alpha-”
Before the doctor could leave, I held his hand. “You cannot tell the Alpha.”
He blinked. “But,”
“You owe me,” I snapped. “When the elders accused you of malpractice, I defended you. You swore you would repay me one day. Please, that day is now.”
He hesitated. “Luna, this is, I'm sure the Alpha would be happy.”
“No one can know,” I said, shaking my head. “Not the Alpha, not the council, no one. You will take this secret to your grave. Please doctor, can you do that for me?”
