**Chapter 9: Into the Darkness**

1244 Words
The group sat in Mira’s apartment, the atmosphere heavy with tension. The dim light from a single lamp cast long shadows on the walls, mirroring the unease that clung to everyone like a second skin. Nora paced back and forth, biting her nails, while Matthew sat on the couch, staring blankly at the floor. Ann was curled up in a corner, her arms wrapped tightly around her knees. Ryan stood by the window, his jaw clenched, staring out into the dark streets below. “We can’t just sit here and do nothing,” Yasmine blurted out, breaking the silence. Her voice wavered with desperation. “Mira is out there, alone. She’s not even from here. We have to do something!” Ann looked up, her face pale. “We don’t even know where to start. What if something’s already happened to her?” Ryan turned away from the window, his expression determined. “Yasmine’s right. No one is going to help us. We can’t wait for the police or anyone else.” He strode into Mira’s room, returning moments later with her broken phone. “Nora, unlock it.” Nora hesitated, her hands trembling as she took the phone from him. She entered the passcode and handed it back. Ryan scrolled through her contacts. “What’s her dad’s name?” “Richard,” Nora replied softly. Ryan found the contact and dialed. After a few rings, a woman’s sharp voice answered. “Yes, Mira, what do you want now?” Ryan cleared his throat. “Hi, this is Ryan, Mira’s friend. Can I speak to her dad? It’s urgent.” The woman scoffed. “This is Samantha, Mira’s stepmom. Richard’s busy. What do you want?” Ryan hesitated, then blurted, “Mira’s missing. We found her phone broken on the floor with drops of blood. We’re really worried, and—” Samantha interrupted with a harsh laugh. “That’s it? She’s probably pulling one of her stunts again. Mira loves attention. Don’t fall for it. And don’t call back. We don’t want anything to do with her anymore. She’s your problem now.” The line went dead. Ryan stared at the phone, disbelief etched across his face. “No wonder she came here. They don’t care about her at all.” Nora looked stricken. “What do we do now? I promised her I’d look after her if she came here. I can’t let her get hurt.” Ryan placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “We start from where this all began. We have to go back to the university.” “What?” Matthew exclaimed. “It’s after 6 PM. That place is dangerous at night. We’d be walking into a death trap!” Ann nodded vigorously. “He’s right. We should wait until morning and inform the police. Going there now is reckless.” Ryan’s eyes burned with determination. “We can’t wait. If we do, she might disappear like Sonia and the others.” He turned to Nora. “I’m going. Are you coming with me?” Nora hesitated, fear evident in her eyes. But after a moment, she nodded. “I’m coming.” Ryan looked at the others. “Matthew? Yasmine?” Yasmine stood up, her hands trembling but her voice steady. “I’m in. We can’t leave her out there.” Matthew sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Fine. But this is insane.” The group grabbed flashlights and jackets, preparing themselves for what lay ahead. --- **Meanwhile, in the dark hallway** Mira slowly regained consciousness. Her body ached, and her head throbbed as she opened her eyes. She was lying on the cold, hard floor of a dark room. She turned her head, scanning the shadows for any sign of the woman. The memory of her hollow eyes and grotesque smile sent a shiver down Mira’s spine. Seeing no one, she forced herself to sit up. Her legs felt weak, but she crawled toward the door, careful not to make a sound. She gently turned the handle and pushed the door open. The hallway beyond was long and dimly lit, stretching endlessly in both directions. A chill ran through her as she stepped out. Suddenly, a blood-curdling scream echoed from behind her. “Miraaaaaaaa! Come back!” Panic surged through her, and she ran. The scream grew fainter as she sprinted down the hallway, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She dared not look back. After what felt like an eternity, she stopped to catch her breath. Her legs felt like jelly, and her heart pounded in her chest. That’s when she noticed a faint beam of light far ahead. Hope flickered within her. She began running again, her feet pounding against the floor. But the more she ran, the farther away the light seemed. It was as if the hallway was stretching, keeping her trapped. Her strength was waning. She stopped again, leaning against the wall, tears streaming down her face. “I can’t do this,” she whispered. “There’s no way out.” But then she noticed something strange. The light wasn’t moving away anymore. It seemed to be getting closer. Mira straightened, her breath hitching. She took cautious steps forward, her eyes fixed on the light. But as she approached, the light seemed to move toward her as well. “What is this?” she murmured, her voice trembling. She stopped in her tracks, dread sinking into her stomach. “There’s no point,” she said aloud. “I’m trapped. There’s no escape.” The hallway fell silent again, save for the faint sound of her breathing. --- **Back at the university** The group approached the campus gates, the towering iron bars casting ominous shadows under the flickering streetlights. “Are we really doing this?” Ann asked, her voice quivering. Ryan nodded, his jaw set. “We have no choice.” They found a side entrance partially hidden by overgrown bushes. The lock was rusted and easily broken. One by one, they slipped through the gate and into the campus grounds. The air was heavy, the silence oppressive. The faint sound of wind rustling through the trees did little to calm their nerves. “This place feels... wrong,” Yasmine whispered, clutching her flashlight tightly. Ryan led the way, heading toward the main building where they had last seen the dean. The group moved cautiously, their footsteps echoing in the empty halls. They reached the dean’s office, but the door was locked. “Let’s split up,” Ryan suggested. “Search for anything—clues, files, anything that might tell us what’s going on.” Nora grabbed his arm. “Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Ryan nodded. “We don’t have much time. Stay in pairs and don’t wander too far.” The group split up, each pair taking a different part of the building. The oppressive silence grew heavier, and every creak and groan of the old building set their nerves on edge. As Ryan and Nora searched one of the offices, Nora whispered, “Ryan, what if we’re too late?” Ryan paused, meeting her gaze. “We won’t stop until we find her. I promise.” --- As Mira sat slumped against the wall in the dark hallway, she felt a cold breath on her neck. “You can’t leave,” a voice hissed behind her. Mira’s scream echoed through the endless darkness.
