Chapter 4
Meeting Nathan Patrick, Pari Malik is struck by how kind his face is. Her own father, if alive, would be about the same age, and she wondered if he had an amiable face too. She has long ago given up the imagery of her unknown father as a prince or celebrity or fantastical ideal. But she realizes at this moment that she especially wants to think of her father as being a man of kindness.
Pari further contemplates that Nathan is dressed so plainly, despite his position as executive director, wearing a simple blue polo-cut shirt with the Moe’uhane’s yellow, red, and green emblem — outlines of a river, birds, and trees — on the left chest.
