Chapter 19 Pari sits up and turns on the lamp on the bedside table. Her light sleep has produced only disjointed, troubling dreams and she has had to force herself out of them. She recalls tunnels with lost exits, mountain ridges bending away from her footsteps, and streams flowing in the wrong direction. Unconsciously or subconsciously, she can stop most nightmares. It is an ability she discovered about herself years ago, but beyond comprehension for most people. She has explained it to others as “a way out” when dreams cause her acute distress. No, this is not real, she can think, and then awaken to acquire some relief. Tonight is chilly. Halo is not beside her. Abby’s cottage is unusually still and dark. She is alone. Why was she dreaming of streams, tunnels, and mountains?
