Chapter 15: Blood Oath

990 Words
Dominic's hand stayed on my thigh the whole ride back from the hospital. While Dante's arm was around my shoulders, holding me so close like he was afraid I might vanish. The car felt too small, too quiet. None of them uttered a single word when we finally pulled into the underground garage of the penthouse. Dominic helped me out first. His touch was careful, almost gentle but he clenched his jaw. Dante walked on my other side, his hand held my lower back. They didn't say a word until we were inside the elevator. "You look scared," Dominic said quietly as the doors closed. I nodded while staring at the floor, having to deal with expecting twins and also dealing with the both of you... feels like I'm drowning already. I stuttered. Dante spun me around to face him. His eyes softer than usual. "We're not trying to drown you, Lila. We're only trying to keep you by our side." The elevator dinged and slid open. They walked me straight to the living room. Dominic went straight for the drawer, he slammed the old family ledger on the table with a heavy thud. "This is the blood oath our father made before he died. We need you to understand why we can't let you go. Why this isn't about the contract anymore." I stood in the middle of the living room staring at the worn out leather book like it was a bomb ready to explode. I was still trying to recover from the shock of the ultrasound result and now this. Dante leaned against the wall, his arms crossed, watching me closely. "Read it. You need to understand why this isn't just about wanting you. it's way bigger than that." I stepped closer and opened the Ledger. The pages were filled with old handwriting, dates, signatures and rules that sounded like they came from a previous century. My fingers traced the line Dominic had pointed to. "Whoever fathers a child first becomes the undisputed mafia lord of the East Coast". I read aloud my voice barely above a whisper. Dominic nodded, his jaw tightening. Our father made this blood oath to stop us from killing each other after he is gone. He saw it as a way that would force us to work together. He said through clenched teeth. Dante stroked the back of my hand with his thumb. He believes it would keep the entire empire strong and in order. But he never imagined we would both fall for the same woman. I closed the ledger slowly. My chest felt tight. "So all of this... the contract, the way you both claimed me...wasn't just about wanting me. It was all about power, right?". I asked, blinking back the tears threatening to fall. Dominic's eyes met mine. "At first yes, but it changed, you changed everything, Lila. The night you woke up in my bed, we had felt such a strong emotional pull towards you. We both wanted you, not just because of the contract nor the oath but for you". Dante leaned closer, his fingers wrapping around my wrist. “We’ve fought over everything our entire lives. Money. Power. Women. But never like this. Never had we come across someone we both refuse to lose.” I yanked my wrist off from his grip, pacing a few steps away, my mind was spinning. “So if the baby is only for one of you… what then happens to the other brother?” I asked. The room went dead silent. Dominic looked at Dante.Dante looked back at him neither of them answered right away. The silence terrified me more than any word could. "That's the part we're still figuring out," Dominic finally said, his voice low. The oath was clear about the empire having just one Mafia Lord. But we're not ready to lose you either. I wrapped my arm around myself, feeling cold even though the room is warm. "So I'm the prize in a game that could destroy the both of you. And again I'm carrying twins, that might belong to only one of you according to some goddamn old paper. I yelled, my chest heaving. Dante stepped closer pulling me into his arms. He pressed his forehead to mine. “You’re not a prize. You’re the woman who makes us want to break every rule we’ve ever lived by. Honestly we’re scared too, Lila. Scared of whatever this means. Scared of losing you.” he said in a low, rough voice. Dominic came up behind me, wrapping his arms around both of us. “We don’t have all the answers. But we know one thing for sure. We’re not letting you go. Not now. Not ever.” I stood between them, feeling their heartbeats against me. The fear was still there, the confusion. But so was something else, a warmth and a kind of pull that keeps drawing me deeper into their dangerous world. A part of me that was starting to want them in the most ridiculous way possible, something I have never imagined before, even though it scared me to death. “I need time,” I whispered. “To figure out how to handle this without losing myself.” Dominic kissed the top of my head. “You have all the whole time in the world, baby. But you’re staying with us. That part won't change.” Dante’s hand rested on my stomach again. “We’ll protect you and the babies.” he whispered into my ear. For a long moment, we just stood there. Three people trying to figure out how to make something impossible work. I felt their warmth. Their strength. Their fear. And for the first time, I let myself lean into it. But deep down, I still wondered how long this fragile peace of mine could last b efore the oath or the world outside tore us apart.
