Chapter 14: The First Ultrasound

The argument of the previous night still hung heavily in the air when we arrived at the private hospital the next morning. I sat between Dominic and Dante in the back seat, my hands resting on my stomach, the memory of my threat; " I will choose neither of you" still burned in my heart. Neither Dominic nor Dante brought up the issue again, but I could feel the tension between them. I was abruptly pulled out of my thoughts when the driver came to a halt in front of the hospital . Dominic and Dante helped me step down. Getting to the doctor's office, he gave out a cheeky smile, offering seats to us. He asked me to lay on the bed for him to check me, after checking me. The doctor's voice was calm but my heart wasn't. " You're carrying twins". Dominic and Dante froze on either of my side. "Twins", they chorused together, they both looked at each other then stared back at me with the same dark possessive hunger. I sat on the examination table, the cold gel still on my stomach, staring at the screen where two tiny heartbeats flickered. My hands trembled in my lap. I had expected one baby, not two. Dominic's hand tightened on my shoulder, his finger dug in a little bit hard, like he was that i might slip away. Dante stood on my other side, completely dazed, his eyes fixed on the monitor like he couldn't believe what he was seeing. So she's carrying twins, Dominic said, his voice low and rough. The doctor smiled politely. "Yes, both are strong so far, but this is a high-risk pregnancy. She'll be needing close monitoring. Bed rest when there's complications. Stress is the biggest challenge right now." Dante finally snapped his gaze off the monitor screen. He leaned down and kissed my temple. We'll make sure she rests and do everything possible to make sure she and the babies are in good condition. I looked up at them. Dominic's face was hard, his jaw looked like he was already planning how to lock the entire world out. Dante's eyes were softer but not less intense. The same hunger I had seen so many times was there, both now it felt deeper and more intense. The doctor left the room excusing us for a moment. The silence was deafening. “We're expecting a set of twins,” I whispered. My voice cracked. “I… I don’t know if I can do this.” Dominic dropped on one of his knees right in front of me, taking both my hands in his. “You don’t have to do it alone. We’re right here with you in every step of it.” Dante knelt on the other side, his hand placed on my stomach. “Our babies. You have given us everything, Lila. And we won’t let anything happen to you or them.” Their words should have comforted me. But instead, they made my chest tight. I was carrying two lives. Two babies who would tie me to these men forever. The weight of it crashing on me all at once. “I’m scared,” I admitted, my eyes welled up with tears. “What if something goes wrong? What if I can’t handle two of them? What if the fighting between you two stresses me out and I lose them?” Dominic’s jaw flexed. He stood up slowly, pulling me up with him until I was standing between them. “Nothing is going to go wrong, Lila. We’ll get the best doctors. The best health care for you.” Dante nodded, his hand never leaving my stomach. “We’ll take turns watching over you. Whatever you need. Food, rest, company, we’ll give it to you.” I looked at them, these two powerful, most feared, dangerous mafia bosses promising to protect me and our babies. It should have felt so good, so relishing. But it also felt like chains tightening around me. They were already planning how to control my every move for the next few months. The doctor came back in with some papers. “I’ll schedule your weekly check-ups, he said. Any bleeding, pain, or dizziness, come straight to the hospital. Take things easy too.” Dominic helped me to the car with so much like I was made of glass. Dante walked on my other side, his hand on my lower back. They flanked me the entire way, their eyes scanning every person we passed like they were expecting an attack at any second. In the back seat, I sat between them again. Dominic pulled me against his side. Dante rested his hand on my thigh. “You’re going to be okay,” Dominic said quietly. “We’ll make sure of it.” I nodded, but my mind was spinning with so many thoughts. Two babies and two men who always fight over me every single day. How was I supposed to do this without losing myself completely? As the car pulled away from the hospital, I whispered the words that had been sitting heavy in my chest since the ultrasound. “I don’t know if I can do this with both of you.” The car went quiet. Dominic turned my face toward him, his eyes dark and intense. “You don’t have a choice anymore, Lila. You’re ours and the babies are ours too. We’re never letting you face this alone.” Dante’s hand tightened on my thigh. “We’ll protect you. Even from ourselves if we have to.” I shut my eyes close, leaning back against the seat. Their bodies pressed closer on both sides. Warm, strong and possessive. And I realized the one truth. I was no longer just carrying their child. I was carrying their future. A nd I have no idea if I'm strong enough to survive it.
