UNFORGOTTEN VOWEpisode 3: When Silence Breaks

1323 Words
The morning air felt colder than it should. Rosa didn’t remember how long she had been lying there. Minutes… hours… it didn’t matter. Time had lost meaning the moment her world shifted. Every movement hurt. Every breath reminded her of something she didn’t want to remember—but couldn’t escape. The quiet street stretched endlessly around her, empty and indifferent, as though nothing had happened. As though she didn’t matter. Her fingers trembled as she tried to push herself up. The strength in her body felt unfamiliar, like it belonged to someone else. But somehow, she forced herself to stand—unsteady, fragile, but standing. “I… I have to move…” she whispered to herself. Her voice sounded distant. She took one step. Then another. Each one heavier than the last. And just as her strength began to fail again— Headlights appeared. ⸻ Elena was not the kind of woman who ignored what others overlooked. Her life had been built on fighting battles most people avoided. As a respected lawyer known for taking on cases of injustice—especially those involving women—she had seen pain, anger, and broken systems. But nothing prepared her for what she saw that morning. As her car approached the quiet street, a figure suddenly stepped into the road. Elena slammed the brakes. The car screeched to a halt. For a moment, everything was still. Then she opened the door. “Hey! Are you—” Her words stopped. The woman in front of her looked like she had walked out of a nightmare. Weak. Shaking. Eyes filled with something deeper than fear—something shattered. Elena’s expression changed instantly. “Oh my God…” Rosa tried to speak, but her voice failed her. “Please…” she managed, barely audible. “Help me…” That was all it took. Elena rushed forward, catching her just as her body gave in again. “It’s okay,” Elena said quickly, holding her steady. “You’re safe. I’ve got you.” Safe. The word felt unfamiliar to Rosa—but she held onto it anyway. ⸻ The drive to the hospital was fast. Too fast. Elena’s hands tightened on the steering wheel as she glanced at Rosa, who sat weakly beside her, barely conscious. “Stay with me,” Elena urged. “We’re almost there.” Her mind was already racing ahead—piecing together what had happened, what needed to be done. She had seen cases like this before. And she knew one thing for certain— This would not be ignored. ⸻ At the city hospital, everything moved quickly. Doctors. Nurses. Questions. Elena didn’t hesitate. “She needs immediate attention,” she said firmly. “And I want a full examination.” The staff nodded, already moving Rosa onto a stretcher. “And document everything,” Elena added, her voice sharp with purpose. “Every detail. Every sign. Preserve all possible evidence.” One of the doctors looked at her, understanding immediately. “You’re thinking legal action.” “I’m not thinking,” Elena replied. “I’m certain.” She stepped aside as they wheeled Rosa away, her jaw tightening. Somewhere out there, someone had done this. And they would answer for it. ⸻ Within minutes, Elena was on her phone. “Yes,” she said, pacing the hallway. “I need to file an urgent report.” Her voice was calm—but beneath it was controlled anger. “A young woman was found in critical condition. Possible assault. I want officers here immediately.” She paused, listening. “No, this isn’t just another case,” she added. “This one—I’m taking personally.” ⸻ Across the city, Adrian didn’t feel like himself. He hadn’t slept. Not really. Every time his eyes closed, the same thing happened. Darkness. A room he couldn’t fully see. And a voice. “Stop…” His body jerked awake again, breath uneven. “…please…” He sat up, running his hands through his hair. “No,” he muttered. “This isn’t real.” But it felt real. Too real. The fear in that voice. The pain. It echoed inside him, refusing to fade. He stood, pacing the room. “What did I do?” he whispered. The question hung in the air. Unanswered. But growing heavier with every passing moment. ⸻ At the police station, tension filled the air. Mr. Brown sat forward in his chair, his hands clasped tightly together. “My daughter doesn’t just disappear,” he said, his voice strained. “That’s not who she is.” The officer across from him nodded. “We understand, sir. We’re doing everything we can.” “Everything?” Mr. Brown repeated, frustration rising. “It’s been hours!” Beside him, Mrs. Brown sat silently, her eyes filled with quiet fear. Rosa wasn’t just their daughter. She was their miracle. And now— She was missing. “We filed the report,” Mr. Brown continued. “We’ve called everyone. Checked everywhere. And still—nothing.” The officer was about to respond when another one entered the room quickly. “Sir…” Something in his tone changed the atmosphere instantly. “We just got a report from the city hospital.” Mr. Brown’s heart skipped. “A young woman was brought in early this morning,” the officer continued. “Condition matches the description.” Silence. “Take me there,” Mr. Brown said, already standing. ⸻ Elsewhere, laughter filled the room. Glasses clinked. Smoke curled into the air. Ben and his friends sat around the table, relaxed, careless. “So,” one of them said, smirking. “Your guy finally loosened up.” Ben leaned back, a satisfied grin on his face. “Told you I’d get him out of that shell.” Another laughed. “He didn’t just come out—he dove in.” The group erupted in amusement. On the television behind them, a program played quietly—background noise to their celebration. Until it wasn’t. “Breaking news—” The words cut through the room. One of them reached for the remote, turning up the volume. The screen shifted. A reporter appeared. “This morning, a young woman was found and rushed to the city hospital under concerning circumstances—” Ben’s smile faded slightly. A blurred image. But familiar enough. Too familiar. “She was discovered on a quiet street, showing signs of severe distress. Authorities have confirmed that an investigation is now underway—” Silence filled the room. No one laughed anymore. “That’s…” one of them said slowly. Another leaned forward. “No way…” Ben didn’t speak. His eyes stayed fixed on the screen. “This case has already drawn attention from legal expert Elena—” “Elena?” someone muttered. “That lawyer?” The tension thickened. “—who has stated that this will not be ignored and that those responsible will be brought to justice.” The word justice hung in the air. Heavy. Unavoidable. One of the men stood up abruptly. “This is bad.” Another shook his head. “We didn’t plan for this.” Ben finally spoke—but his voice was no longer relaxed. “Calm down,” he said. But even he didn’t sound convinced. Because for the first time— Something had gone wrong. ⸻ Back at the hospital, Rosa lay still, her eyes barely open. Machines beeped softly around her. Elena stood by the door, watching quietly. This was no longer just a case. This was a fight. And somewhere out there— The person responsible had no idea what was coming. ⸻ Adrian stood alone in his room. The voice echoed again. “Please…” His hands clenched. And for the first time— Fear crept in. Not of what he remembered. But of what he didn’t. ⸻ To be continued…
