Just two weeks later, Tommy arrived at the teachers’ lounge before noon and staked out a seat. A few teachers walked in and gave him suspicious looks.
“I’m the new baseball coach,” he explained. They just nodded and got out their lunches from the refrigerator.
Finally, about ten minutes later, Ellie walked in. She didn’t even notice Tommy as she grabbed her Cobb salad from the fridge and sat down at a table with two colleagues. Tommy waited until she was in her seat before strolling over from the far corner of the room.
“Hi, Miss Wainwright,” he said in a pleasant voice.
“What are you doing here? Are you stalking me?”
The other teachers looked up from their food.
“I got the baseball coaching job,” Tommy said. “I thought I’d drop by and tell you.”
