Atlanta Braves scouts Stu Rosen and Chico Sanchez settled into their seats behind home plate at Luther Williams Field, hoping to be impressed.
“I’ll wait until the third or fourth inning to use this,” Sanchez said, raising up the radar gun. “That will give him time to get loose.”
“Good. From what they’re saying, Browning should be throwing smoke by then,” Rosen replied.
“I hope so,” Sanchez said, with a sly smile. “I asked Concannon not to tell him he was only going five innings. I want him thinking it’s just another start. We’ll see how his velocity is when he’s pacing himself to go nine.”
But it hardly looked like “just another start.” The stadium was filling up quickly. Fans jumped to their feet and danced as the PA system blasted out “La Bamba” during warm-ups.
