Valerie POV
“Stop!” I yelled, but her nails pierced through my face and made a cut on it.
The scream echoed, eyes filled with tears, as Sera glanced with fear.
She stood up, scanned around, and ran like someone would catch her.
I sat there, bleeding, no one to help. My eyes were blurry, but that wouldn’t have stopped me from rushing to the clinic.
Just then, I saw Mom; she sighted me from the parlor as she walked majestically toward me with her hands clutched to her mouth, stopping her from bursting into laughs.
“Good for you; next time you do as we told you.”
Mom showed her tongue as she mocked me happily.
“You’re heartless!” I muttered under my breath as the blood dripped, covering my eyes from glancing at her as she walked out of the house.
Just like that, my life became worse than before.
A month later****
“She…no, pregnant?” Mom’s voice pierced through my mind as the sun reflected on my face, pulling me to rise off the bed, my eyes aching from the mark Sera gave me weeks ago.
“Pregnant?” The word slipped off my mouth as I stared at Mom, who kept shouting as she roamed around like something bad had happened.
Immediately, she began to approach me. Her veins popped out and hands tightened, lifted up, ready to punch me, this time, for real.
“Ungrateful child!” I felt my cheeks sore in pain as she slapped me, her eyes fixed with mine, staring with the killer look. If a look could kill, I would be dead by now.
“How could you? After everything we did for you, you decided to—” She paused, took a deep breath, shut her eyes, and then opened them.
“Mom, what’s happened?” My voice was barely a whisper as I sat down properly. Inhaling the hospital scent.
What does she mean?
Pregnant?
Who?
Me?
I pointed at myself as I shook my head, refusing to believe it wasn’t possible. I could have been that, but not at this hour.
“You slut! You had the guts and got pregnant,”
Mom’s voice echoed through the room. As the nurse glanced at us, she lifted her mouth to utter some words but shunned it the moment her eyes met with my stepmother’s own.
“Leave!” “Viva!” yelled at the nurse, who moved back, hands trembling and eyelashes blinking before rushing outside the room.
“Now, answer me, who is the so-called father?”
She sat beside me, like she was waiting for me to lie on last time and receive the beating of my life.
“I don’t know.” I frowned and folded my legs, even though the drip marks were revealing.
“You must be sick in that skull of yours.” She croaked, her hands lifted toward my neck but paused the moment the door opened slowly.
We turned only to meet the doctor; he noticed us, cleared his throat, and adjusted his scrub uniform.
“Ma, I would love to have a personal discussion with Miss Valerie.” His voice was barely a whisper, but Mom shook her head, refusing as she sighed, stood up, and then faced the doctor.
“Whatever you both want to discuss, I’m here to listen.” She snapped.
“But M—” The doctor shut his lips the moment Viva waved him to stop.
“I’m her stepmom and I need to know everything about her.”
The doctor glanced at me and then at Mom before clearing his throat and taking a quick glance at the jotter board he held.
“Miss Valerie’s body had shown some symptoms, caused by lack of rest, and I would prefer her making out time for her resting routine.”
“That’s all?” Viva rolled her eyes at me as she tapped her legs onto the ground like Dad.
“And also, I would love for her to visit for a checkup after a week from now,” he mentioned.
“Alright, I would make sure it’s settled. Thank you,” Viva spoke.
That was the last I could recall before stepping out of the cab we ordered. Mom kept cursing beneath her breath as she pointed fingers at me each time she got the chance to.
Sera sighted us from afar as she ran and hugged her mom. The moment she untangled her mom, she noticed the coldness both of us had.
“Mom, what happened?” Sera questioned, but her mom didn’t utter a word but rather, eyes perched at me, with hatred deep in her face.
“This b***h—” Viva stopped, exhaled deeply, and then faced me.
“Had the guts to get pregnant, without any proper marriage or anything.” I watched them spark as Sera turned with a mocking clap.
“I told you, you would never win, not on my watch.”
Sera helped her mom as they walked inside the house, leaving me all alone.
Reflecting on my past, everything that had happened.
How could that be possible?
Pregnant for a stranger?
No…it couldn’t be, not in this era.
Immediately, I took a bold step inside; I saw Dad, his eyes darkened and his face fixed on me.
“Dad… I’m sorry, I di—”
“From today, no more leaving the house and no more freedom. You would wash and clean the house, do the food, and even help everyone with their chores.” Dad cut me off as he spoke with his sharp and commanding voice
.
I bowed my head and wiped those tears that refused to stay put.
Everything I had worked for.
All in vain.
Because of one night.
“Now! Go in and grab the dirty clothes our neighbor Daisy brought in, and wash them.” Dad yelled, as his voice cracked in pain.
“What?”
That so-called neighbor, who never cared about my life, only reminded me of how ugly and disgusting she looked at me, and now this, washing her clothes.
“Don’t provoke me, or else…” Dad pointed his fingers at me. I swallowed the tears down my already wooden throat as I fastened my legs toward the room.
Immediately, I stepped into my room; the whole place was messed up. My bed flipped toward the door, my table almost crushed down.
My eyes stopped at the doll Mom had bought for me before she died, crushed into pieces.
I rushed quickly and held it, trying to fix it, but I couldn’t.
“No…not this one.” The remaining part slipped down from my hands to the floor, reminding me I was all alone.
From then on, life was hell. I just lived through the days, one after the other, waiting for it to end. I thought I knew what suffering felt like.
Not until I was sold.
