THE MOST POWERFUL ALLY

940 Words
The ballroom was already buzzing with rumors and quiet voices, but everything shifted when Adrian Vale walked over and stood next to Lola Hart. When Adrian made a move, people noticed. He didn’t waste time on anybody unless it meant something important—so him standing with Lola sent a message loud and clear to the entire room. All the guests who’d been sizing Lola up earlier? Now they watched her with a new kind of attention. Respect. And maybe a little fear. Adrian Vale wasn’t just rich; he was ruthless and he ruled more than boardrooms. If he had your back, you weren’t alone. Period. Adrian moved in, just a bit, and rested his hand on Lola’s lower back. It looked casual—almost gentle—but everyone saw it and knew it was intentional. No one would dare question her now. Lola felt the heat of his touch through her dress. She glanced up for a second—he looked calm, but his eyes were calculating. He leaned in, his voice low enough that only she could hear. “Relax,” he said. “You’re doing perfectly.” She took a slow breath. With Adrian beside her, all the attention in the room doubled, but she didn’t feel nervous anymore. His presence shifted everything. Across the room, Marcus Vale whistled under his breath. “Well,” he said. Claire Donovan arched an eyebrow, “That’s quite the statement.” Marcus nodded. “He just declared a public alliance.” Claire looked at Daniel Carter. “That should make things interesting.” Daniel felt like the floor had changed beneath him when Adrian came in. Everybody in business knew the name. Adrian Vale was the kind of man you didn’t ignore, didn’t challenge, and definitely didn’t want as an enemy. He watched Adrian’s hand settle on Lola’s back, his stomach twisting. “What the hell…” he muttered. Vanessa stiffened beside him, her glare fixed on Lola. “That woman…” she hissed. Daniel frowned, “What?” Vanessa’s anger barely stayed contained. “She’s doing this deliberately. She shows up here dressed like that, acting important—” she spit out. “She is important,” Daniel cut in. Vanessa spun toward him, shocked. “What did you just say?” Daniel hesitated. He couldn’t deny it anymore. Lola belonged in this world, and she wasn’t pretending. Vanessa stared at Adrian’s hand on Lola, something snapping inside her. “That’s Adrian Vale.” Daniel nodded. “I know.” Vanessa’s voice was icy. “And he’s touching her like she belongs to him.” Daniel didn’t reply, but seeing that—yeah, it made something ugly flare in his chest. Adrian looked relaxed, but he was watching everything: every whisper, every look from Daniel. He talked quietly to Lola, his voice calm. “See what’s happening?” “Yeah,” Lola said. “Everyone in the room is looking at you.” She took a sip of champagne. “I noticed.” Adrian smiled. “And Daniel Carter?” She didn’t need to look. She could feel his eyes on her. “He’s watching too.” “Good,” Adrian said. Lola glanced at him, “You look pretty pleased.” “I am.” “Why?” He leaned a bit closer, dropping his voice low. “Because tonight’s the beginning.” “The beginning of what?” A quick glance toward Daniel. “Of a very interesting story.” A few businessmen nearby—whispering again. “Did you see that? Adrian Vale’s backing her.” “She’s not just wealthy…she’s protected.” “Nobody goes after someone Adrian Vale stands behind.” The realization rippled through the room. Lola Hart wasn’t Daniel Carter’s forgotten ex anymore. She had power. She had connections. And, honestly, she had one of the most dangerous allies anybody could ask for. Vanessa, back near the Carter group, looked like she might burst. “I can’t believe this.” Daniel finally looked at her. “Calm down.” “How can I? She’s humiliating us!” Daniel frowned. “She’s not doing anything.” “She’s standing there with Adrian Vale!” “And?” “And now everyone’s looking!” Truth was, they weren’t watching Daniel or Vanessa anymore—they were watching Lola. Adrian guided Lola to a quieter spot near a marble pillar. People noticed that, too. He only acted with purpose. Once there, he spoke again. “You handled that entrance well.” Lola shrugged. “I didn’t do anything.” Adrian eyed her carefully. “You didn’t need to. You just showed up.” She smiled a little. “That was the plan.” He softened briefly. “You’re learning fast.” She leaned back against the pillar, “Your advice helped.” He chuckled quietly. “I only said patience.” She nodded, eyes flicking over to Daniel, who hadn’t stopped staring. For once, since the whole divorce mess, Lola didn’t feel powerless. Adrian followed her gaze. His voice got even quieter. “You see him?” “Yeah.” “What do you feel?” Lola thought, then answered honestly. “Nothing.” Adrian’s face shifted—he was pleased. “Good.” “Why?” “Because revenge fueled by anger is messy. But revenge fueled by control…” His voice went soft, almost tender, “…is unstoppable.” Lola’s heart thudded a little faster. Across the ballroom, Vanessa was still locked on them, seething. Adrian leaned in closer, so only Lola could hear. Barely a whisper. “Let the revenge begin.”
