Chapter 3

1282 Words
Alicia's POV I stared down at the device in my hands, and I saw I was being paged to the emergency ward. I was active, rushing to the situation only to find out it had been a little girl rushed to the ER. “She's a special case, and the moment she was brought here, we thought about you. Is there anything you can do about it?” One of the doctor's asked, and I nodded. With determination in my eye, I examined the little one, and my eyes widened when I made a discovery. “She's internally bleeding from her head, possibly from a head injury, but she needs surgery, or she's going to keep bleeding until it gets to her brain.” I explained, causing the rest to nod. They assisted me, and together with their help, we rushed into surgery. Time ticked as we performed an operation on the little girl with I being the lead doctor because the rest of the doctors were scared to take the lead even when I didn't know why. Hours passed, and we finally got everything settled. She was stable, and her heart rate was normal. Once we had cleaned up, the board of directors addressed us. “You are all good doctors. That girl would have died without your help. Thank you, Miss Alicia, for upholding our reputation.” I smiled, giving a small nod. “But it wasn't only me. I had good team-mates to help me, and they should be equally recognised.” I didn't say anything else, I was quiet, and we were dismissed for the day. The next day came, and being the doctor in charge of the little girl's case, I headed to her room to check up on. I took little notes, and was happy she already opened her eyes, and was already speaking perfectly. “She woke up in the early hours of the morning,” the nurses on night duty said when I arrived which made me rush there. However, as I checked up on her, a familiar voice called my attention. I pulled back to see the director of all doctors, and he gestured for me to come. I nodded, turning to the little girl, and spreading my lips in a smile. “I'll be right back okay? I just have to see him first…” She nodded, giving me the permission I needed to actually leave. I walked over to the director, and he sighed. “Someone's here to see you. In fact, we need to be somewhere now.” I furrowed my brows. “Where? I can't just leave her, I have to finish my–” “Someone can finish it up for you. We can always assign one of the nurses,” he interrupted me before I could finish speaking, and since he was the director, I couldn't argue. He walked in front while I followed him. However, his direction got me concerned. Why was he taking me towards the cafeteria? Before I could question him, I was already, there was already a group of people waiting there for me. I couldn't say anything, I was stunned, but what stunned me more was the fact that the doctors and media personalities clapped when they saw me. Some journalist rushed towards me, asking questions which I couldn't process because everything was so foreign, but one thing I heard was. “This is the doctor that saved the governor’s daughter.” As I was being pulled to the stage, the governor who had been given a special seat stood up. He came over to where I stood afterwards, and stretched his hands. “I'm sorry this came so sudden, and you were not duly informed, but I just wanted to appreciate you for what you did. My daughter matters to me so much, and you saved her,” he said, being all emotional. I smiled. I understand what he was feeling, it was the love of a parent. He was probably scared he would have lost her, but it was a good thing she was brought in on time. “I didn't do it alone sir, we had a lot of arms on deck, and I'm glad–” “But you're the lead doctor, or that, I recognise you as the best doctor in town, and the hospital has just become the best because of you…” he explained, and I gasped when I saw that he had made an award to seal what was happening. “Thank you so much governor…” I said when he quickly collected the award from his assistant, and handed it over to me. “Thank you so much…” He smiled. “I should be thanking you.” Then paused. “I'll go check up on my daughter. We'll chat some other time, okay?” I nodded, still feeling like this was all a dream, but the congratulations from my colleague made me feel it wasn't. I was still being greeted when I was informed of someone wanting to see me. “Who?” I asked, but she shrugged her shoulders. “I don't know, but he's still waiting, so you should go see him, fast…” another colleague informed, making me hurry out of there. I used the door, making my way to the main entrance when my eyes caught sight of someone. As always, he was putting on black trousers, and his white shirt was left unbuttoned at the utmost top. “Bro, what are you doing here?” I asked, and he finally took off his glasses. “Mom, mom asked me to pick you up.” “Why?” Creased lines appeared on my forehead as I questioned. I had a feeling something was fishy. “Well she has another date planned, and you have to attend…” he explained, gesturing for me to move. Since I didn't have anything else to do, I placed the award on his arms, and walked towards where the car was parked. “Isn't she tired? I told her I'm not interested…’ I explained, but my brother remained silent. “This is the fourth one!” I fumed, hating how everything was going. She had set me up with three different men, and they were all too stupid for me. Besides that, I had been avoiding men for two years especially since what happened between me and Rowen. “She should take a chill pill and let me—” “Alicia Anderson, tell that to your mom. Don't worry, we're almost home,” he expressed, and only then did I calm down. When I got home, I walked up to my room, and I pressed my lips together. She was immobile due to the accident that took place years ago, but her lips were sharp as razors. “Alicia, what's this I'm hearing? Aren't you going to get married?” I sighed. “I’m sorry mom, I'm trying really, but I don't want to. I have a career, what else can. I–” Her sigh interrupted my words, and she inched closer, staring into my eyes. “I know you have no idea what you're saying now, but fine, I'll let you have your life. Just one more date, please…” she begged. “One more date, and if you're not feeling the guy, you won't be bothered by me any more.” It was only right that she was worried. She never knew I was married before, no one but my cousin did. “Fine mom, I have agreed to your terms, but only because you agreed with mine.”
