No answer.
The woods had gone still again.
Still wary, Lorraine approached the spot she heard the snap from.
True enough, there was a depression in the ground.
A broken branch, but no one.
“That makes no sense,” she thought, wondering if she was losing her mind.
She looked again for good measure, but found nothing else.
Even the scent she caught earlier was gone.
“Could it be an animal?” she thought in confusion as she headed back.
Her hand didn't leave her holster even as she got back to the middle of the pack.
She couldn't shake the pricking sensation at the back of her neck too.
Almost like… she was being watched.
“Well, you are,” Kiara said, chipping into her thoughts.
Lorraine looked up and realised the pack members passing by and those on their porches were tossing glances her way.
When her gaze met with that of an elderly woman, the woman gave her a kindly smile and a respectful bow.
Lorraine walked faster.
“Greetings, Luna.”
She visibly flinched when a man passing stopped to greet her.
“What is it with these people?” she thought with building panic.
The smile she attempted felt feral to her.
And when the man's eyes widened slightly before he hurried on, she knew how she must have looked.
Like a predator baring her fangs.
“Damn it,” she muttered, annoyed she had nowhere else to go but the alpha house.
Like their alpha, how could they just accept her so easily? she wondered.
He had not even named her Luna. Yet, knowing she was his mate already made them all accept her as one.
Her skin felt itchy with the reverence and admiration in every gaze she met.
Almost like she was some precious treasure.
“They won't think that if they know what I have done,” the ugly thought reared its head, twisting her stomach into knots.
She doubted Logan would look at her the same way too.
Goddess, she needed to leave. If only she knew where the f**k the pack was.
She was beginning to detest Logan's teleportation ability.
It was why she had no idea where they were as…
Lorraine froze as a thought occurred to her.
The scent. The snap, with no one in sight!
“Could it be that Logan is not the only one with that ability in this…?”
“Pretty lady!”
The chirpy voice jerked Lorraine out of her thought.
She looked towards the porch and saw the child skipping ahead of a maid.
“No, not the child,” she groaned inwardly, knowing she was in no mood for sunshine and positivity.
She had expended her little patience when she spoke to the girl earlier.
Now, she was in a mood to choke out a rejection from her mate and be on her way.
Still, she couldn't help noticing the difference as the girl kept coming, like she had no sense of personal space.
Gone were the dirty smudges on her face. Clean clothes. Shoes on.
Before Lorraine could take a cautious step back, the girl grabbed on to her hand, shaking it slightly as she said, “You are right. He didn't send me away. Mama was right. He's a good man. Good men don't send their pups away.”
"Uhm", Lorraine was lost for words in the face of bouncy curls and tawny eyes staring up at her like they were best of friends.
Lorraine didn't want to be right.
Well, since that meant Logan was not a total prick, maybe being right was fine.
But she had no idea what to say to the girl.
“Goo…”
"Luna", the maid finally caught up to the girl and bowed to Lorraine.
That feeling of dread was back again.
Lorraine wanted to pull her hand away from the girl and…
“Luna?” the girl said with her head tilted in thought.
Seeing the girl do that, just like Logan once had, made her want to scream.
“I know who Luna is. The Luna is with the alpha. They are…” her eyes sharpened on Lorraine. “You are married to Father?"
Oh, kill me. “That is not…”
“Can I call you Luna too?” the girl rolled right over her.
“Just call me Lorraine,” she almost snapped.
"Lorraine", the girl rolled the name on her tongue like a discovery.
Then she beamed, “I like it. You can call me Solana.”
Pretty name, Lorraine thought automatically, belatedly frowning at the absurd thought.
The front door opened and there he stood.
His eyes locked on her in that disturbing way that made her feel unfamiliar warmth.
“There you are. I was just coming to look for you.”
“You found me.” She hoped the frost in her tone complemented the message in her eyes.
“Come with me, dear,” the maid told Solana.
The girl left without another word, not before Lorraine saw her dart a nervous glance in Logan's direction.
She frowned at that as she watched him come down the steps.
