CHAPTER THREE

Elena’s POV The morning sunlight hit the living room through the tall windows, but I barely noticed. My hands trembled as I held the thick envelope from last night, the crimson seal still unbroken. My heart pounded like it wanted to escape my chest. I glanced at Ethan, who was standing across the room, calm as ever, watching me with that unreadable expression of his. He said nothing, but I could feel the weight of his gaze. Swallowing hard, I broke the seal and unfolded the papers inside. My eyes widened. It wasn’t bills. It wasn’t some mundane legal notice. It was a photograph. Not just one, but dozens of him in suits, at meetings, speaking to men whose presence alone demanded attention, in buildings that gleamed with glass and steel. A luxury I could barely imagine. And then, the caption at the bottom of each image reads; Carter Global Holdings – Ethan Carter, CEO. I dropped the papers. My mind reeled. He… he’s the billionaire? Ethan’s POV She’s holding the envelope now. I can see the moment she realizes. The fear, the awe, and the sudden shift in her carefully controlled composure. She doesn’t understand why I concealed my identity. She thinks I’ve been hiding something petty. But she has no idea what it takes to live in my world. Dangerous men, ruthless competitors, people who respect strength above all else my every move has consequences she cannot yet comprehend. And yet, I want her to understand. I want her to see what I see. But not yet. Timing is everything. Elena’s POV My hands shook as I pieced together what I was seeing. The man I had married, the man everyone mocked as worthless was one of the most powerful people in the country. My heart twisted in ways I hadn’t expected: fear, awe, disbelief… and an involuntary surge of something dangerously close to admiration. I looked up at him. “Why… why didn’t you tell me?” My voice was barely above a whisper. He stepped closer, slow, deliberate. “Because the world doesn’t need to know who I am. You… you will have to decide if you want to handle that truth,” he said I wanted to speak, to ask a thousand questions at once, but my throat went dry. I felt like a child staring into a storm, small, fragile, yet drawn to the danger. And then, the sound of a knock at the door shattered the moment. Naomi’s POV “Ethan Carter? Elena Hart?” The voice was crisp and professional, but there was a sharp edge to it that made the air feel heavier. I stepped inside without waiting for an invitation. “I believe this concerns both of you.” I held a folder in my hands, thick and sealed. My heels clicked sharply against the floor as I approached. “You’re in deeper than you realize,” I said softly, almost a warning. Elena looked at me with wide eyes, confused. “Who… who are you?” I smiled faintly, but there was no warmth in it. “Someone who knows what he’s capable of. Someone who’s been watching.” Ethan’s POV Naomi… of course she’s here. Always one step ahead. Her timing is precise. Her knowledge is dangerous. And now, she’s entered our space. I didn’t flinch. I didn’t move. But inside, I felt the tension spike. This is no longer about marriage, or about appearances. It’s about control. And she’s testing boundaries I haven’t allowed anyone to test. I caught Elena’s eye. It was filled with fear, Confusion, and… something else. Desire? Attraction? A dangerous mixture I could not yet name. Elena’s POV The folder Naomi handed Ethan snapped shut with a sharp click, but it echoed in my mind like a gunshot. “What… what is this?” I whispered. Ethan’s expression remained calm, almost unreadable. “Proof. Evidence. Things you will need to understand why my life—our life—is never as simple as you imagined.” Naomi glanced at me briefly. “Some truths are dangerous. Others are necessary.” She paused, then left, her heels clicking down the hallway like a countdown I couldn’t ignore. I stared at Ethan. “You… you knew she’d come?” “I knew someone would,” he said quietly. “I also know you’re stronger than you look. But the question is… can you handle the consequences?” I felt my chest tighten, my mind racing. He had always been mysterious, even in our short marriage. But this, this was on another level entirely. Dangerous men respect him. He knows luxury when he sees it. And now, I realize that I don’t even know who I married. My hands clenched into fists. My mind screamed, but my voice wouldn’t follow. And just as I was about to demand answers, my phone buzzed. A message from an unknown number: “Meet me at the address in the envelope, or your secrets, or your life will be exposed.” I stared at Ethan. “What… what is this?” He didn’t answer. He only stepped closer, and the faintest smirk curved on his lips. “I told you. Timing is everything. Are you ready to see the world I live in?” Ethan’s silence unsettled me more than any other explanation. The calm in his eyes didn't look like fear, rather it looked like control. And suddenly I wondered if the real danger wasn't the enemy outside but the powerful stranger that I had married. A chill crawled down my spine as the weight of his words settled in my chest. For the first time I realized marrying Ethan hadn't changed my life but had pulled me straight into his battlefield. And in that instant, I realized: my life, my marriage, and everything I had sacrificed was just the beginning. Can I survive the truth of who my husband really is and everything he’s hiding from me?
