CHAPTER ELEVEN

1336 Words
Elena’s POV The elevator rose toward the top floor of the “Carter Global Tower”, and every second felt heavier than the last. Davis stood near the control panel, his expression sharp and alert. Marcus leaned casually against the wall, hands in his coat pockets like we were riding up to a dinner meeting instead of walking into a trap. And Ethan, he stood beside me, silent, watchful, and dangerous. The building lights flickered across his face as the elevator climbed higher. “You can still turn back,” he said quietly. I looked at him. “No.” “Elena.” “You asked me earlier if I understood what stepping into this world means,” I said. His eyes met mine. “Yes.” “Well…” I inhaled slowly. “I do now.” The elevator hummed softly. “People are trying to destroy you,” I continued. “Vanessa betrayed my family.” “And someone tried to kill me.” My voice hardened slightly. “So no, Ethan.” “I’m not turning back.” Something in his gaze shifted it could be respect, pride, or maybe even something deeper. Marcus chuckled from the corner. “I like her,” he said. Ethan didn’t look away from me. “I do too.” My face warmed slightly despite the danger around us. The elevator suddenly slowed and we were on the top floor. A quiet ding echoed through the cabin. Davis lifted his gun slightly. “Showtime.” The doors slid open. Ethan’s POV The top floor was dark and Vanessa liked dramatic entrances. I stepped forward slowly. “Elena stay behind me,” I said. She ignored that instruction immediately, instead, she stepped beside me. She is a stubborn woman. Marcus smirked. “Told you she’s brave.” Davis scanned the room. “No visible security.” “That’s impossible,” I said. Vanessa wouldn’t meet us without protection. Then, soft footsteps echoed across the floor, and a single spotlight flicked on. And there she was. Vanessa Hart. Standing near the glass wall overlooking the city. As usual elegant, calm, and smiling. “Elena,” she said sweetly. My wife stiffened beside me. “Vanessa.” Victor Kane stood slightly behind her like a shadow. But something about the dynamic felt wrong. Victor wasn’t leading rather he was watching. Vanessa lifted her champagne glass. “I’m impressed you came.” Elena stepped forward. “You wanted to see me.” Vanessa smiled. “Oh, cousin.” “I’ve wanted to see you for a very long time.” Daniel’s POV I stood near the private bar across the room, hidden in the shadows and watching everything. My wife Vanessa, the woman I thought I knew, married, and the woman who had slowly become someone I didn’t recognize. When she finally noticed me, her eyes widened slightly. “Daniel?” Elena turned immediately. “Daniel?” Her voice held surprise and confusion. Vanessa’s smile faded slightly. “You weren’t supposed to come,” she said coldly. I stepped into the light. “That’s funny.” “Because I’m your husband.” The room felt tense instantly. Elena looked between us. “What’s going on?” Vanessa’s expression hardened. “You should leave.” “No.” Her jaw tightened. “I mean it, Daniel.” I walked closer. “You’ve been lying to everyone.” “To Ethan.” “To your family.” “And to me.” Victor chuckled softly behind her. “This is getting interesting.” Vanessa ignored him. She stared directly at me. “You wouldn’t understand.” “Then explain.” For the first time since I’d known her, Vanessa looked uncertain. Vanessa’s POV Daniel was a complication, a small one, but still inconvenient. “You shouldn’t have come here,” I told him calmly. “You’re not part of this.” His eyes darkened. “I was the moment I married you.” Elena looked shocked. “You knew about this?” Daniel shook his head. “No.” “I just discovered the truth.” He glanced toward Ethan. “And I came to stop her.” The room went silent. Elena stepped forward slowly. “Vanessa… why?” My cousin, always the naive one, the favorite, and always the one everyone loved. I laughed softly. “You really don’t know?” She shook her head. “No.” I gestured around the penthouse floor. The building, the empire. “This,” I said. “Elena.” “This is why.” Ethan Carter’s wealth, his power, his influence, and everything that should have been mine. “You married him by accident,” I continued. “You stumbled into a life people would kill for.” My smile turned sharp. “And I simply decided to take it.” Elena’s POV The words hit me like ice water. “You started a war… for money?” Vanessa laughed. “Oh please.” “This isn’t about money.” She stepped closer. “It’s about power.” Her gaze slid toward Ethan. “Men like him control cities.” She looked back at me. “And I refuse to live in someone else’s shadow.” Daniel’s voice was quiet but firm. “You’re destroying lives,” he said Vanessa didn’t even look at him. “Collateral damage.” The words were cold, emotionless, and for the first time in my life, I realized something terrifying. Vanessa wasn’t jealous, hurt, or misunderstood. She was ruthless. Ethan suddenly stepped forward. “You wanted me here,” he said calmly. “So talk.” Vanessa smiled again. “Oh, I will.” She looked at Elena. “But first…” Her gaze turned sharp. “…I want my cousin to understand something.” My stomach tightened. “What?” Vanessa lifted a small remote device. And pressed a button. The large screen behind her flickered on, and security footage appeared. My breath caught, It was footage of my mother inside a hospital room. My heart stopped. “What did you do?” I whispered. Vanessa tilted her head slightly. “Relax.” “She’s still alive.” The room felt like it was spinning. “Still?” I repeated. “Yes.” Vanessa’s smile darkened. “Because she’s the final piece of leverage.” Ethan’s POV My anger was dangerously close to exploding. “You threatened her family.” Vanessa shrugged. “Of course.” “People make better decisions when the stakes are high.” Elena’s hands clenched. “You’re insane.” Vanessa laughed softly. “No.” “I’m winning.” Marcus suddenly spoke from behind us. “Actually…” “…I’m not sure you are.” Everyone turned toward him. Vanessa frowned. “What?” Marcus stepped forward slowly. His voice is calm. “But there’s something you forgot.” Vanessa narrowed her eyes. “And what’s that?” Marcus looked directly at Elena. “The one person in this room you underestimated.” Silence filled the floor. Vanessa scoffed. “Elena?” Marcus nodded. “Yes.” And then he revealed the twist. “Because she’s the only one here who doesn’t care about power.” He turned toward Ethan. “And that makes her the most dangerous player in this war.” Suddenly the emergency alarms in the tower blared and red lights flashed across the floor. Davis cursed. “That’s not security.” Ethan’s voice turned sharp. “Then what is it?” Marcus looked toward the elevator calmly. “I’d guess, Vanessa’s backup plan.” The elevator doors opened slowly, and a group of armed men stepped out. Victor Kane smiled. “Well,” he said. “Now the real war begins.” If Vanessa is willing to use my mother as leverage and unleash an armed takeover of Ethan’s tower, how will be able can Elena outmaneuver the woman who has been planning this war for years?
