PROLOGUE

244 Words
Prologue The city lights glittered like diamonds against the night sky, but all I could see was the hospital ceiling. My mother’s labored breathing echoed in my ears, a rhythm that matched the panic in my chest. The bills were thousands upon thousands which lay on the counter like a cruel joke. How was I supposed to save her? And then Vanessa’s words cut through the chaos like a knife: “Marry him. Take my place.” she said”. The “him” she spoke of was supposed to be ugly, useless, and unworthy of anyone’s attention. Everyone in our family laughed at the idea that anyone could ever love him. And now, she wanted me to marry him instead. I wanted to scream. I wanted to run. I wanted to disappear. But the sight of my mother, fragile and pale, silenced every protest in my heart. I had no choice. That night, as I lay in a guest bedroom that would soon become my cage, I tried to imagine what kind of man I had agreed to marry. A fool? A fraud? Or something far worse? I didn’t know that by morning, my life would unravel in ways I could never have imagined. I didn’t know that the man everyone mocked, was watching me already. And I didn’t know that this “worthless” husband would one day hold more power over my heart and my world than anyone ever could.
