Elena’s POV
The message on my phone felt heavier than the phone itself.
“Meet me at the address in the envelope, or your life secrets will be exposed.”
My heart pounded violently as I reread the words.
“Ethan…” My voice trembled despite my effort to stay calm. “What does this mean?”
He glanced at the phone briefly, then looked back at me with that same controlled expression that always made it impossible to read him.
“It means,” he said quietly, “someone wants to play a game.” A game? My stomach twisted.
“This doesn’t look like a game,” I muttered.
He stepped closer, and suddenly the air felt too warm, too heavy. His presence always did this to me as gravity itself bent around him.
“Everything is a game in my world,” he said. “The only question is whether you know the rules.”
I clenched my fists.
“Then tell me the rules.” I insisted
For a moment, he simply stared at me. His gaze lingered on my face, as if weighing something.
“You’re not ready for them yet.”
Frustration surged through me.
“Stop saying that!” I snapped. “You keep telling me I don’t understand your world, but you’re not explaining anything either!”
For the first time since I met him, something flickered in Ethan’s eyes. Not anger but respect.
And that somehow made my pulse race even faster.
“You want the truth?” he said.
“Yes.”
“Then we go to the address.”
My breath caught. “Tonight.”
Ethan’s POV
She didn’t hesitate. That was what surprised me.
Most people would have backed away by now. Most people would have chosen safety.
But Elena stood there, stubborn determination burning in her eyes. She had no idea how dangerous this was. And yet… she still said yes.
That was exactly why she fascinated me.
“Get ready,” I told her.
She blinked. “Ready?”
“You’ll understand when we get there.”
I turned toward the door, grabbing my coat.
Behind me, I heard her mutter under her breath, “You’re unbelievable.”
I almost smiled.
Elena’s POV
The car ride was silent as Ethan drove with one hand on the wheel, his posture relaxed, but there was something about the way he scanned the road that made me realize something unsettling. He was always alert and always calculating, as if danger was normal for him.
Streetlights passed over his face, revealing sharp shadows across his jawline. I stole a glance at him.
“How rich are you?” I asked suddenly.
He didn’t react immediately.
Then he said calmly, “Does it matter?”
“Yes!”
He finally looked at me.
“Enough that powerful men listen when I speak,” he said.
My breath caught. That was not a normal answer.
Before I could ask more questions, the car slowed. We stopped in front of a towering glass building.
I frowned.
“This place looks like a corporate headquarters.”
“It is.”
“And we’re just… walking in?”
Ethan stepped out of the car.
“Yes.”
Inside, the lobby was enormous. There were marble floors, crystal lighting, and security guards standing at attention.
The moment Ethan walked in, something strange happened. The guards straightened immediately.
One of them even nodded respectfully.
“Good evening, sir.”
Sir?
I looked at Ethan, confused.
He didn’t respond to the guard. He simply kept walking. The elevator opened instantly as if it had been waiting for him. My heart pounded harder.
Something was very wrong, or very right.
When we reached the top floor, the doors slid open.
And that’s when I saw them. Five men stood inside the massive office. All were wearing expensive suits, they were all looking like they ran entire industries.
The moment Ethan entered, they stood. Every single one of them with respect. Not casual respect but the kind of respect people give someone far more powerful than them. My pulse spiked.
One man stepped forward, tall, with silver hair, and sharp eyes.
“Mr. Carter,” he said calmly.
The words echoed in my mind.
Ethan Carter, CEO, and Billionaire. My husband.
The man extended a hand.
“I’m Davis Whitmore,” he said.
Then he looked at me.
“And you must be the woman who married him.”
Something about his tone made me uneasy.
“Is that a problem?” I asked carefully.
Daniel studied me like I was a puzzle piece.
“Not yet.”
My stomach tightened.
Then he dropped a thick file on the table.
“You’re here because someone has declared war on Carter Global.”
The room went silent. My heart nearly stopped.
War?
This wasn’t business. This was something else entirely.
Ethan’s POV
Davis had always loved dramatic entrances. But this time, the situation was real. I opened the file slowly there were photos, documents, and surveillance reports. Someone had been watching Elena.
Watching us. My jaw tightened.
“This is recent,” I said quietly.
Davis nodded.
“Very recent.”
Elena stepped closer, clearly confused.
“Can someone please explain what’s going on?”
I looked at her. Really looked at her. She deserved the truth now.
“Someone is targeting you,” I said.
Her eyes widened.
“Me?” she asked
“Yes.”
Davis leaned against the table.
“Which means they’re targeting him.”
My chest burned with quiet anger.
Because there was only one group bold enough to do this.
And if I was right…
Things were about to become very dangerous.
Naomi’s POV
From across the street, I watched the lights of Carter Global’s top floor. They had arrived. Right on time.
I smiled faintly.
Elena was already stepping into a world she didn’t understand. And Ethan… Well. He was about to realize something far worse.
The enemy he thought he had defeated two years ago?
They were back. And this time…They weren’t just coming for his empire.
They were coming for his wife.
Elena’s POV
My head spun as the conversation continued around me. Words like security, threat, and surveillance filled the room. I felt like I had stepped into a completely different life. A dangerous one.
Finally, I turned to Ethan.
“Tell me the truth.”
He met my gaze, and I didn’t look away either.
After a long silence, he said something that made my blood run cold.
“This is why I hid who I was.”
The room felt smaller, but he continued quietly.
“Because being close to me…”
His voice lowered.
“…makes you a target.”
My breath caught.
Suddenly, the mysterious message on my phone made horrifying sense. Someone wasn’t threatening me. They were hunting me.
And I had just walked straight into their world.
If my husband’s power has made me a target… will loving him become the most dangerous mistake of my life?
