Toren
Serena had fallen asleep on my shoulder . Her breath was steady now - peaceful , like she had finally allowed herself a moment of calm . But I couldn’t sleep .
I stared up at the sky , the stars flickering above us , and felt as if my entire world had shifted .
She was Frostvale’s daughter . That frostvale . The marshal of Elvenya I had admired since I was a boy . The man I believed to be the very embodiment of honor and courage . The man whose death sparked this cursed war .
And she had come here to avenge him . To avenge herself . Against me - the one she believed to be his killer .
I clenched my fists , trying not to wake her . Rage boiled in my chest . Pain . Shame .
Because I had killed . On the battlefield . Without mercy . I had slain Elvenyans - maybe her friends , her mentors . I had fought against her country , her people . And never imagined that the heart of my enemy .. beat right beside me .
But she had lied , too . Pretended . Stayed close . Smiled .. while carrying the weight of her hatred . And still - I couldn’t blame her .
How could I resent someone who had become my entire world ?
I looked down at her face . Even in sleep , her brow furrowed slightly - a habit born of pain . I had a part in that . Maybe not directly .. but I was part of the war that shaped her into this .
Then her words came back to me :
“I thought it was you who killed my father .. but then I found out it was his friend .”
I remembered that day . The order . The command to eliminate Marshal Frostvale . But it hadn’t come from me . I was stationed in the northern fortress at the time . And the name at the bottom of the order .. was one I knew far too well .
Morning draped us in coolness . The first light slipped through the treetops , sliding across her face , making her lashes flutter .
Serena stirred . Her fingers tightened around my cloak unconsciously , as if even in sleep she feared I would vanish .
I didn’t move . Just watched .
Watch her awaken . Her lips slightly parted with a soft inhale . The world seemed to pause , not daring to disturb her .
The world knew : she was my silence .
Her eyes opened - deep , dark brown . For a few seconds , she didn’t know where she was . Then her gaze found me . I saw memory returning - followed by tension .
“You didn’t leave ,” she whispered .
I shook my head .
“And I won’t . Even if you wake up and tell me :”Go .”
She looked away , biting her lip .
“I didn’t mean to fall asleep ..”
“But you did .”
“Because .. for the first time in a while , I wasn’t scared .”
Those words tore through me .
She had learned to live in fear . To survive alone .
And I - damn me - wanted to change that . Not because I had to . But because I couldn’t do otherwise .
“You once said you hated me ,” I reminded her quietly .
“I did ,” she met my eyes , and there was no hatred there . Only exhaustion - and honestly . “Because I didn’t know you .”
“ And now ?”
She hesitated . A long moment .
Then whispered , “Now I’m confused .”
I smiled .
“Sounds like progress .”
She smiled too - faintly . The first since she opened her eyes .
We sat side by side , unmoving . The forest stirred , birds sang , grass chilled our legs . But between us - silence . Not suffocating , but alive . The kind where no words were needed .
I wanted to hold her . To make sure she was real . That this wasn’t a dream .
But I knew - too fast , and she’d flee .
She’d come to me . If she chose to .
“Toren ,” she said suddenly , her voice serious . “What happens now ?”
“I don’t know . I didn’t think past this night .”
She sighed .
“What if I still leave ?”
“Then I’ll still find you . Even if you run to the furthest corner of the kingdom .”
She looked at me - long , quiet . In her eyes , something fragile whispered : Don’t promise what you can’t keep .”
“What if I betray your king ?”
I leaned closer .
“Then you’ll be the first I kiss before everything goes to hell .”
Serena flushed . But didn’t pull away .
And in that moment I knew - she still wanted to run , but part of her had already stayed . With me .
