The sirens grew louder until the entire house seemed to vibrate with their echo. Red and blue lights splashed across the walls. My heart thudded in my chest. I still felt the tiny recorder warm against my skin where I’d hidden it. One wrong move and everything could explode. A hard knock slammed against the door. “Police!” a voice called. Pierce gave me a look that said, remember what I told you. I swallowed, my throat dry and tight. The door swung open, and two officers stepped in. Their flashlights swept across the dusty floor, landing on the three of us – Pierce, I, and a trembling Mia partially tucked behind my arm.
