Blood.
There was so much blood.
Steel walls twenty feet high surrounded me on all sides. Red, hot blood oozed from the floor over my feet. It filled the space as more and more came up out of the ground. It rose an inch, then another, and then another, until it was up to my knees. I jumped and banged on the steel, but it was useless.
I looked around. There was no way out.
The blood rose another foot, and I could no longer jump. It weighed me down and threatened to pull me under.
“Theo.”
I searched around frantically for the voice but saw no one.
“Theo!”
I gasped for air and jackknifed up in bed. Mary’s soft hands wrapped around my chest and squeezed.
“Nightmare?” she asked, even though she already knew the answer.
I nodded and focused on my breat
