Chapter five Small Towns

1178 Words
We ran and ran until Ava and I had no strength left. We ended up in a small clearing next to a small town, with a big 'Welcome to Tula, Michigan' sign. It had golden white borders, the town looked very well cared for. Hiding into the cover of the trees. I told Ava we should shift and get into clothes, I checked to see if all my money was there and thank the moon goddesses it was.1500$ aint much but it's enough to at least find a apartment or hotel for a night or something. Walking into town my bag over my shoulder a sweatshirt and matching sweatpants, no shoes or socks. I kept going until I found a*****e or anywhere I could go to get directions from. I see a little ma and pa store, opening the door and walking in I look around for anything I could need or use. Firstly I need food, Ava is yelling at me for not getting there faster. "I'm hungry, Bailee. Hurry up!" "Im going, Im going. Chill Ava." I silently screamed at her. Yummy! Beef jerky and a couple protein bars oughta do. Walking to the register to check out a older lady with a nametag that read "Greta" boldy asks "Whats your business in these parts, sweetheart?" "Oh, I umm. I'm traveling got some business to attend to. Nothing serious though. How about you, lived here long?" "Yes I have, sweetheart. May I ask what business you would have that leaves you with no shoes?" She said looking down at my feet. I couldn't respond or say anything I was speechless, I don't know why I thought it wouldn't be noticeable. I have been through enough today already. Embarrassed my face red. "I'm sorry I was just grounding myself, wearing no shoes helps alot. I was wondering if there were any places for rent around here?" I asked. "Farmer Toad has a cabin on his property for the working farm hand, if you would like I can write down his address?" She asked sympathetically without commenting on my weird explanation for no shoes. "That would be amazing" I reply. Taking the paper with address from Greta I left the store and started looking for streets or any sign to lead me to the farm. I got super lucky after about a 5 mile walk I see the sign 'Farmer Toad this way, 5 miles'. So more walking, and walking and walking. Hours later I see the farm up ahead. It was a dairy goat farm, there were goat's everywhere with their babies or older male goats ramming into each other to fight for dominance. Boy, does that look familiar. Heading down the white gravel path directly to the farm house, swiftly knocking on the door. Waiting a couple minutes to see if anyone answered before I knocked again. Just as I was about to knock again, an older man opened the door gray hair with streaks of white. Grey beard braided down his chest resting on his mud covered blue overalls. He looks me over before he says anything. There was a long pause. " You must be the one Greta sent me, shes right you do look terrible. Come on in. Harriet we got the new farm hand!" He shouted. Pausing again, realization coming over him. "Um,whats your name again?" "I'm Bailee, Bailee Cho. Nice to meet you farmer toad?" I ask cautiously. "Aye, just call me Junior toad was my grandpa. Nickname gets passed around too much." "Ok Junior." I said with a nod. "Harriet her name is Bailee." pause, she yells back and he replies shouting again. " I dont flabbin know Woman come ask her yourself. Geesh the gull of that woman in the 37 years of being married, you think she would listen when I told her to go ahead and get her hearing checked." He said shaking his head leading me to the kitchen. Chapter six Farmhand Arriving into the kitchen. The kitchen was rustic themed, big too. Olive green walls white cupboards, farmhouse table big enough for 12 people. To my right is an older lady. Her cheeks are wrinkled her smile wide with the shiniest teeth. She is just a humming and singing with her apron on. "Hello dear, give me a moment put this bread in the oven." Walking over to their big oven putting three loaves of bread in she turns to look at me. " Well, I'm surprised you aint got frostbite not having any shoes on. Spring is here but we still have cold weather in Michigan for a good week or so." "Greta sure picks them, huh?" Her husband said. "That she does. Toad dear, will you get this poor girl a pair of my shoes and some blankets for over at the bunkhouse." "Yes, Harriet. Lets go Bailee."he said sounding resigned. "Okay." I squeek putting on the brand new pink nikes they just so conveniently have. Follow Toad to the bunk house it was a log cabin dark oak colored but the inside was spectacular. Though a little small, the inside had a room to the back left with 3 bunkbeds. No blankets or anything on them yet the second room beside that was the bathroom. The living room and kitchen were open concepts, it was like I was on a nice vacation. "It's beautiful here." "Thanks my great grandfather built it, we kept the up keep doing repairs and such keeps things from going bad ,you know?" "My old house always leaked rain or water, no one would ever helped me repair it. Had the most beautifully carved fireplace. Only thing I've known since I was 4." I said with a sigh. He looked so saddened by my words. "How long you planning on staying, Ms.Cho?" Toad asked " If its ok i would like to stay till I finish college. I seen a nice little college on my way through town. I have always love reading about science so I wanna try to be an environmentalist." " Oh I think I like you already. Well here is everything. Harriet and I are heading to the farmers market anything you need or want let me know." He said walking out the the cabin door. Only to walk back in " Dang nabbit, sorry I forgot to tell you your job to the right from here is a haybarn you are to clean the pens out for the goats and milk them 6am sharp everyday." "Ok, I can do that." I replied. " Alrighty, then I'm going to go." He walked back out and didnt turn around this time. Making myself useful I did exactly what he asked I worked out there from beginning of the dawn until dusk I was absolutely exhausted. When I came back into the cabin to see a plate of food next to a couple bags of clothes. They even gave me another pair of nikes and some s**t kickers. I think I'm going to love it here.
