Evan’s demeanor remained cold and unresponsive as the elevator continued to go up. He was like a statue made of ice. Or one curved from stone. His eyes remained fixed on the elevator doors as though Zoey hadn’t spoken to him. Zoey nervously fidgeted beside him, unsure of whether to repeat her question or not. She was sure he had heard her, even though he was pretending otherwise. Finally, he took her out of her misery and spoke in a curt, clipped tone. “I had my people change your mother’s room to the VIP ward on the top floor.” With that, he fell silent again, offering no further explanation.
