Zoey deftly peeled the apple, as a gnawing sense of unease coiled in her chest. She dared not meet her mother’s eyes, fearful that her mother would see the truth in hers. Since she had never been able to hide anything from her mother since she was a child. Instead, she kept her gaze fixed on the fruit she peeled, its sweet fragrance wafting up to her nostrils.
