Chapter 65Kofi Annan HallThe hall was filled to capacity. The first few rows of
seats occupied by ambassadors to the UN, visiting dignitaries and officials,
and the Secretary General’s guests. The media had their notepads,
microphones, camcorders and palm pads poised. Television cameras were sited
along the walls of the auditorium.
Among the many present were members of numerous
denominations and religious leaders; notable were those from the Chief
Rabbi’s US office and well-known Islamist leaders. There is no primate for
Catholics in the United States, however, the Diocese of Baltimore, which
held Prerogative of Place, was represented by three bishops.
The event in Paris had been a valuable introduction to
speaking before a celebrated audience. I was nervous but contained when
