Chapter 60New York StateI worked out that the safe house was somewhere on Long Island. It was a large dwelling in three acres of lawn and woodland. On three sides was a high perimeter wall, and an abundance of CCTV cameras. The fourth opened onto an expanse of water, across which came a regular procession of yachts, dinghies and motor launches of every shape, size and degree of ostentation. Everything we needed was to hand, but we were captives in luxury. We could not use the house phones or our mobiles. There were no newspapers, no contact with the outside world. We watched television, mostly the news programmes. The tension in the air was palpable. Monty Whittaker was as frustrated as the rest of us but he did his level best to keep our spirits up.
