The First Warning

She turned the pages of the documents, reading every word and examining every figure carefully. But still, she could not find any trace of the previous page or the next one. Every figure in the documents seemed forged, either the accounts the money had been sent to were untraceable, or there were no accounts at all. Yet, somehow, the money was gone. Mr. Carter had handed the documents to her the previous day, asking her to read them carefully and give him her review once she was done. She had never expected to find clues about what her father had told her so easily. For a moment, she wanted to give up, but she was not the kind of person who gave up easily. She stared at the scattered files covering her table before reaching for one she had not yet read. Just as she was about to open it, something suddenly struck her. She froze, a thought had crossed her mind. Slowly, she rose from her seat and walked toward the window, she pulled the curtains open and realized that dawn had already broken. The soft morning sunlight streamed into the room, illuminating the mess of documents scattered across the table and pieces of note on the floor. She returned to her seat and picked up the glass of wine beside her, taking a slow sip as she sank into the empty chair facing the window. Her mind kept returning to one question, why had her father wanted her to marry their family's greatest rival? She could not find the answer because, deep down, she knew the marriage would never happen. “Why do I need him?” she asked herself, taking another sip of her wine. “I can do this alone, I don't need a subordinate.” Just then, her phone rang, she glanced at the screen before answering the call. “If you want to do what is best for yourself, marry Hilary,” a voice said, “the executives are not easy to handle alone, unless you want to end up dead.” The call abruptly ended, Nora stared at her phone, the screen had already gone black. She couldn't understand what had just happened. Her heart began to race as nervousness and confusion settled over her. “Will he agree to see me, what if he doesn't like me, will I really be the one to shoot my shot?” she muttered. She stood up from the chair and headed downstairs to the sitting room. She sat at the dining table and began eating her food. After taking a few bites of toasted bread, she suddenly stopped. “Is this company really that dangerous?” she wondered aloud. She picked up her phone and called Alfred, the family butler who stays at the other end of the house. Alfred had been the family's butler since her childhood, and he was one of the few people she could trust without hesitation. A few minutes later, Alfred appeared and walked toward her, lowering his head respectfully. “Ma'am, you called me?” Nora gestured for him to sit. “Alfred, I want to ask you something.” Alfred sat down and looked at her with a slight smile. “You can ask me anything, ma'am.” “How is the company?” Nora asked, her expression turning serious. “Is it dangerous?” Alfred's smile disappeared. He took a deep breath before answering. “I wouldn't say the company is dangerous, ma'am, but I wouldn't say it is safe either.” Nora's eyes narrowed. “What does that mean?” Alfred remained silent for a moment, as though he was carefully choosing his next words. “It means, ma'am, that there are things about this company that you probably haven't been told.” “But there is one thing you need to understand, the story behind how this company rose to where it is today.” Alfred looked at her seriously. “Your father built this business over the years because he wanted to give you a perfect life. He worked hard and sacrificed a lot to make sure you would never have to struggle.” He paused, his expression becoming more serious. “Please, ma'am, don't let your father's company go to waste.” Nora lowered her gaze. Alfred took a deep breath before continuing. “I heard your father asked you to marry Hilary. In my opinion, I believe that might be the best decision for you.” He slowly stood up. “Ma'am, I would like to take my leave.” Nora watched Alfred's back as he walked away before turning her attention back to her food. She ate quietly and slowly, her mind occupied with everything he had said. When she finished eating, she dragged herself upstairs to her room, she lay on her bed and stared at the ceiling, contemplating whether she should meet Hilary or not. After thinking about it for a long while, she finally made up her mind, she would give in to her father's condition Nora reached for her phone and called Mr. Carter “I'm willing to get married to him,” she said the moment he answered. There was a brief silence on the other end. “Are you sure about your decision?” Mr. Carter asked. “I've made my decision,” Nora replied firmly. “I'm willing to marry him.” Mr. Carter let out a quiet breath. “Alright. I'll take care of everything.” He immediately ended the call and contacted Hilary. At that moment, Hilary was seated in an important meeting with several investors when his phone began to ring, He looked at his phone screen, it was Mr. Carter. He excused himself from the meeting and answered the call. “Sir Brown,” Mr. Keta said, “Nora is willing to marry you.” The moment Hilary heard those words, a smile slowly spread across his face, when he returned to the meeting, the investors exchanged confused glances. “Why is he smiling?” “Is everything alright?” Hilary ignored their questions, his mind was already somewhere else, he had finally gotten the answer he had been waiting for. Without wasting any time, Hilary arranged a date with Nora, he wanted to see her in person, and this time, their meeting would be about more than just business.
