Chapter One The bells of the Imperial Palace rang thirteen times. Seraphina Valeria stood in the center of the throne hall and listened to every one of them. Thirteen. The number seemed wrong. There were twelve hours in a day. Twelve months in a year. Twelve great houses that ruled beneath the imperial family. But thirteen bells meant death. Seraphina slowly lifted her head. Hundreds of people filled the throne hall. Nobles stood shoulder to shoulder beneath the towering golden pillars. Soldiers lined the walls, their swords drawn. Servants whispered behind trembling hands. And every single pair of eyes was fixed on her. On the Empress. On the woman they had come to hate. Her white nightdress was stained with blood. Not her blood. Emperor Adrian's. The memory of it flashed through her mind. The emperor lying motionless upon the marble floor. The crimson stain spreading across his white robes. The jeweled dagger beside his hand. Her own fingerprints supposedly covering its hilt. And the screams. Someone had screamed that the Empress had murdered the Emperor. Someone else had called for her arrest. Then the guards had stormed into her chambers. Seraphina still couldn't understand how everything had changed so quickly. Only an hour ago, she had been the most powerful woman in the empire. Now she stood barefoot before the throne she had once shared with her husband. Her crown was still on her head. For the moment. "Empress Seraphina Valeria." The voice of the Imperial Chancellor echoed through the hall. Seraphina looked toward him. Lord Marcus stood beside the throne, holding a sealed document in both hands. His face was solemn. Too solemn. "By order of the Imperial Council," he continued, "you have been accused of the murder of His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Adrian Valerius." A murmur swept through the hall. Seraphina stared at him. "Murder?" The word barely left her lips. Lord Marcus continued as though he hadn't heard her. "You were discovered inside His Majesty's private chambers shortly after midnight. His Majesty was found dead. A weapon believed to be the murder weapon was discovered beside his body." Seraphina's fingers curled into fists. "I did not kill him." Her voice echoed through the enormous chamber. "I swear before the gods, I did not kill the Emperor." A few nobles looked away. Others stared at her with disgust. From the crowd came a whisper. "She killed him." Another voice answered. "After everything the Emperor gave her." Seraphina's heart tightened. Everything he gave her? Had they forgotten who she was before she became Empress? She was Princess Seraphina Valeria, daughter of one of the oldest noble houses in the empire. She had entered the imperial palace as a bride. She had given Adrian her loyalty. Her trust. Her heart. She had stood beside him through wars, rebellions, famine, and political unrest. She had believed every smile. Every promise. Every whispered word of love. And now they called her a murderer. "Where is the evidence?" she demanded. The Chancellor raised the document. "The evidence is overwhelming." "Then show it to me." Silence. Seraphina took a step forward. "Show me." Two guards immediately crossed their spears in front of her. She stopped. Her eyes moved across the hall. Then she saw her. Lady Celeste. Standing beside the imperial physician. Celeste wore a white mourning gown embroidered with silver flowers. Her golden hair fell perfectly over her shoulders, and tears glistened in her blue eyes. She looked devastated. Perfectly devastated. Seraphina stared at her. Something cold moved through her chest. Celeste had been Adrian's closest companion for years. His confidante. His favorite lady. The woman Seraphina had foolishly considered a friend. Celeste met her eyes. For a moment, neither woman spoke. Then Celeste lowered her gaze. A tear slipped down her cheek. "How could you do this?" she whispered. Seraphina's breath caught. "Do what?" "How could you kill him?" The hall erupted. "Monster!" "Traitor!" "She murdered our Emperor!" Seraphina shook her head. "No." She looked directly at Celeste. "I did not kill Adrian." Celeste covered her mouth. "Please don't lie anymore." Lie? Seraphina almost laughed. It was such an absurd accusation that for one brief moment, she thought she might wake from this nightmare. But the cold marble beneath her bare feet was real. The guards were real. The blood on her gown was real. And the dead emperor lying behind those enormous doors was real. Seraphina looked toward the sealed doors of the imperial chamber. "Let me see my husband." The Chancellor shook his head. "You have no right." "No right?" Her voice trembled with anger. "I am his wife." "You were." The words struck harder than any slap. Seraphina stared at him. The Chancellor's expression did not change. "You are no longer recognized as Empress." Her hand instinctively rose toward her crown. The heavy golden crown rested against her dark hair. It had been placed upon her head three years ago. Three years ago, Adrian had smiled at her during their coronation. He had taken her hand. He had promised before the entire empire that she would stand beside him for the rest of their lives. Seraphina had believed him. She had loved him. Gods, how she had loved him. She remembered their wedding night. The first dance. The first time he called her his queen. The countless nights when she had fallen asleep believing herself safe. How foolish she had been. "Remove the crown." The command came from the Chancellor. Seraphina's eyes widened. "No." Two guards stepped forward. She backed away. "Don't touch me." "Remove it." One guard reached for her. Seraphina slapped his hand away. "I said don't touch me!" The entire hall fell silent. She looked around at the people she had once ruled beside. Not one person stepped forward. Not one. Then she saw her father. Duke Valeria stood among the nobles. His face was pale. Her mother stood beside him, trembling. Her younger brother was being restrained by two soldiers. "Father..." Seraphina's voice broke. Her father looked at her. For a moment, she saw the pain in his eyes. Then the Chancellor spoke. "Your Majesty's entire family has been placed under investigation." Seraphina froze. "What?" "The Valeria family is suspected of conspiring against the throne." "No." Her father's voice thundered across the hall. "My daughter would never—" "Father!" Seraphina turned toward him. Her brother struggled against the soldiers. "This is a trap!" he shouted. "Seraphina would never kill the Emperor!" A soldier struck him across the face. "Stop!" Seraphina lunged forward. The guards blocked her. "Leave my brother alone!" Her mother began crying. Seraphina's heart shattered. This wasn't only about her. They were coming for her family. Suddenly, everything became clear. The accusation. The weapon. The blood. The guards arriving so quickly. Celeste's perfect tears. This had been planned. Someone had spent months preparing this moment. Perhaps years. And she had walked directly into it. "Who found the Emperor?" Seraphina asked. No one answered. She looked at the Chancellor. "Who found him?" "The Imperial Guard." "Which guard?" "That is irrelevant." "No." Seraphina's voice became steady. "It is not." She looked around the hall. "If I murdered the Emperor, then someone must have witnessed me entering his chamber." Silence. "Where is the witness?" The Chancellor's expression tightened. Seraphina continued. "Where is the physician who examined the body? Where is the captain who found the weapon? Where are the servants who were stationed outside the chamber?" No one answered. Seraphina smiled bitterly. "You have an accusation." She pointed toward the sealed doors. "But you don't have the truth." Celeste suddenly began crying harder. "She is trying to manipulate everyone." Seraphina turned toward her. "Am I?" Celeste lowered her head. "You hated Adrian." "I loved him." "You were angry with him." "Because he was my husband." "You argued with him tonight." Seraphina stopped. Her mind raced. Yes. She had argued with Adrian. But it had been hours earlier. He had summoned her to his private study. He had seemed nervous. Distracted. He had asked her strange questions about her family. About her father. About the ancient Valeria bloodline. She had asked him why. He hadn't answered. Then he had kissed her forehead and told her they would speak in the morning. There had been no murder. No dagger. No blood. At least, not then. "Yes," Seraphina finally said. "We argued." A murmur moved through the crowd. Celeste looked at the nobles. "You see?" Seraphina shook her head. "We argued. That does not make me a murderer." The Chancellor opened the document in his hands. "There is more." Seraphina's stomach tightened. "The murder weapon bears your fingerprints." A dagger was carried into the hall. Seraphina recognized it immediately. Her breath stopped. It was Adrian's ceremonial dagger. She had given it to him on their wedding anniversary. But the hilt... Her fingers had touched it countless times. "This proves nothing." The Chancellor's eyes hardened. "The dagger was found beside His Majesty's body." "It was his." "And your fingerprints were found upon it." "Of course they were!" Seraphina's voice rose. "I have touched that dagger before!" Another murmur. The Chancellor smiled coldly. "Then explain why your fingerprints were found mixed with fresh blood." Seraphina couldn't answer. Because she didn't know. She looked down at her hands. They were shaking. Her memories returned in fragments. Adrian had been alive when she last saw him. He had been standing beside the window. He had been wearing black. He had looked at her strangely. And then— Nothing. A blank space. Seraphina's eyes widened. Someone had drugged her. Or altered her memory. Someone had planned everything. She looked toward Celeste again. Celeste was watching her. And this time, Seraphina saw it. Not grief. Not fear. Satisfaction. Just for a second. A tiny smile touched Celeste's lips. Seraphina's blood ran cold. She knows. The realization struck her like lightning. Celeste knew exactly what had happened. Perhaps she had planned it. Perhaps Adrian had— Seraphina couldn't finish the thought. Then the Chancellor spoke the words that would destroy her world. "By decree of the Imperial Council, Seraphina Valeria is hereby stripped of her title as Empress." A soldier stepped forward. Seraphina instinctively reached for her crown. "No." The soldier grabbed it. She fought him. "Don't!" The crown was pulled from her head. Her dark hair fell across her face. The golden crown hit the marble floor. Clang. The sound echoed through the throne hall. Seraphina stared at it. The crown she had worn for three years lay at her feet. Broken. Bloodied. Surrounded by the shadows of the people who had once bowed to her. She slowly lifted her eyes. Celeste was smiling. And Seraphina finally understood. This wasn't the end of her life. It was the beginning of something far worse. Or perhaps— Something far more dangerous. Because if they wanted to turn her into a villain... Then one day, they would learn what a real villain looked like. But first, she had to survive. And as the guards seized her arms and dragged her toward the waiting doors, Seraphina made herself a promise. She would remember every face. Every voice. Every betrayal. And if she survived this night, she would uncover the truth. No matter how deep the conspiracy went. No matter who stood behind it. Even if it led to the man she had loved. Even if it led to the throne itself. Seraphina Valeria would find the truth. She had not yet realized that the truth would cost her everything. Her family. Her crown. Her heart. And eventually— Her life.
