CHAPTER FIVE: WHISPERS IN THE DARK

1277 Words
Aria’s consciousness flickered back slowly, her body heavy and aching. The faint scent of pine and earth surrounded her, grounding her in the present. She opened her eyes to find herself lying in Liam’s room. The soft, golden glow of a nearby lamp illuminated his modest space—functional and bare compared to Ethan’s luxurious quarters. Liam sat by the window, his back to her, his shoulders tense as he gazed out into the dark forest. The moon hung low in the sky, its light casting a silver halo around him. “Liam?” Her voice was weak, but it drew his attention immediately. He turned, his piercing blue eyes scanning her face with a mixture of relief and something else—something raw and unguarded. “You’re awake,” he said, his voice soft but taut with emotion. She tried to sit up, but a wave of dizziness hit her. Liam was at her side in an instant, his hands steadying her shoulders. His touch sent a jolt through her, the bond between them humming faintly in the background. “You need to rest,” he said firmly, his jaw tightening as if he were holding back something more. Aria shook her head, her memories rushing back in fragments. Klaus. The fight. The light. The voice of the Moon Goddess. “What happened? I—” “You unleashed something,” Liam interrupted, his tone measured but edged with worry. “Something powerful. It knocked Klaus off his feet, but it also drained you. You passed out.” Her mind swirled with the implications. She had felt the power, wild and consuming, but it had come and gone so quickly, leaving her hollow and unsure. “I don’t understand,” she murmured, looking down at her trembling hands. “What’s happening to me?” Liam hesitated, his eyes searching hers as if debating how much to say. Finally, he leaned closer, his voice low. “The Moon Goddess chose you, Aria. For what, I don’t know yet. But whatever this is, it’s bigger than any of us.” The door swung open with a sharp creak, and Ethan stormed in, his expression a storm of anger and concern. “What the hell were you thinking, Liam? Bringing her here instead of the healer?” Liam stood, his body tense, the unspoken challenge in his stance clear. “She needed rest, not interrogation. And you were too busy brooding over Klaus to notice she collapsed.” Ethan’s eyes flicked to Aria, softening slightly before his frustration bubbled back up. “Aria, are you okay?” He approached her, his hand brushing against her forehead. “I’m fine,” she muttered, though the weight of his touch felt suffocating compared to the electricity of Liam’s. “You’re not fine,” Ethan snapped, stepping back and pacing the room. “You unleashed some kind of power that none of us understand. Klaus will come back for you—stronger this time. “And if he does,” Liam cut in, his voice sharp and unwavering, “then we’ll be ready. But barking orders at her isn’t going to help anyone.” Ethan turned on him, his eyes flashing with dominance. “Do you think I don’t care? That I’m not doing everything in my power to protect her? This isn’t just about her bond with you, Liam. This is about the pack’s survival.” Aria flinched at the tension between them. The air in the room crackled with unspoken words, emotions running high. She felt like a thread pulled taut between them, ready to snap at any moment. “Stop!” she shouted, her voice breaking. Both men froze, their heads whipping toward her. “This isn’t about either of you. I don’t know what’s happening to me, but I won’t let it tear this pack apart.” Ethan sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I’m sorry,” he said softly. “I just… I can’t lose you, Aria. Not to Klaus, not to anything.” His words should have soothed her, but instead, they felt heavy with possessiveness. She glanced at Liam, whose gaze softened as he studied her, his unspoken support steadier and more grounding. “We’ll figure this out,” Liam said, his voice like a calm breeze cutting through the storm. “Together.” Ethan’s jaw clenched, but he said nothing, his silence louder than any argument. ~The Moon’s Warning~ Later that night, unable to sleep, Aria wandered out of the packhouse and into the forest. The moon was high, bathing the trees in an ethereal glow. She felt its pull, the quiet whispers of something ancient calling to her. She stopped in a clearing, the air around her thick with magic. Her heart raced as the whispers grew louder, resolving into a single voice. “Aria,” the voice said, soft but commanding. It was the Moon Goddess. Aria dropped to her knees, her hands clutching the cool grass. “Why me?” she asked, her voice trembling. “Why am I different?” “You were chosen, child,” the Goddess replied, her voice carrying both warmth and authority. “You are the bridge between two worlds—the strength this pack needs to survive. But your journey will not be easy.” Aria’s chest tightened. “What am I supposed to do? I feel… lost.” “Trust your instincts. Trust your heart,” the Goddess said. “But beware, for the one who seeks to claim you will stop at nothing to possess your power. You must learn to control it, or it will consume you.” Before Aria could ask more, the presence faded, leaving her alone beneath the moonlight. ~The Rival’s Threat~ The next morning, chaos erupted in the pack. Klaus’s spies had slipped into the territory during the night, leaving a message burned into the ground outside the packhouse: “She belongs to me.” Ethan’s face was thunderous as he barked orders to strengthen the patrols. Liam stood beside him, his expression grim. Aria stared at the message, her heart pounding. Klaus wasn’t just a rival alpha—he was a predator, and she was his prey. But as fear clawed at her, something inside her shifted. A flicker of the power she had felt during the fight with Klaus returned, a reminder that she wasn’t helpless. She turned to Ethan and Liam, her voice steady. “He wants me. Fine. But I’m not running anymore.” Both men stared at her, surprised by the steel in her voice. “What are you saying?” Ethan asked cautiously. “I’m saying,” Aria said, her gaze hardening, “that it’s time to stop reacting and start fighting back.” Before anyone could respond, a howl pierced the air, chilling and close. The pack’s warriors froze, their heads snapping toward the sound. Liam’s eyes darkened. “He’s here.” Aria’s heart thudded in her chest as she stepped closer to the two men, her newfound resolve warring with the terror creeping up her spine. Ethan growled low, his voice a warning. “Stay close, Aria. No matter what happens.” But Aria wasn’t sure she could obey. As the sound of footsteps echoed through the trees, a shadow emerged from the forest—a figure tall, commanding, and unmistakably Klaus. “Time to come home, darling,” Klaus called out, his voice dripping with venomous charm. Aria’s breath hitched, her body trembling. But this time, it wasn’t just fear coursing through her veins. It was something stronger. Something primal. Something ready to fight. To be continued….
