The forest was eerily silent, save for the distant howl that sent a ripple of unease through Aria. Ethan’s hand gripped her wrist now—not tenderly, not protectively, but like she was something that might break loose at any second.
Liam stood motionless, his sharp gray eyes fixed on Ethan’s hand as if daring his brother to cross a line. His presence still lingered in the air, thick and undeniable.
“Klaus is close,” Ethan said, his voice clipped. “We need to get back to the packhouse. Now.”
Aria swallowed hard, her heart a wild drumbeat in her chest. She glanced at Liam, hoping for answers, for some reassurance that what she felt wasn’t madness. But his jaw was tight, his shoulders tense.
“You shouldn’t be here,” Ethan barked at Liam as he began pulling Aria toward the path.
“I’m not leaving,” Liam shot back, his voice low but resolute. “Klaus or no Klaus, you can’t keep running from the truth.”
Aria froze mid-step, her feet refusing to move. She wrenched her arm from Ethan’s grasp and turned to face them both.
“What truth?” Her voice was sharper than she intended, her frustration bubbling to the surface. “Why do I feel this—this bond with him, Ethan? Why didn’t you tell me?”
Ethan flinched, his blue eyes clouding with something between anger and regret.
“It’s not what you think,” he said.
Liam’s bitter laugh cut through the tension. “It’s exactly what she thinks.”
“Enough!” Ethan snarled, his alpha command rolling off him in waves. His power vibrated in the air, sending a chill down Aria’s spine. But when her gaze met Liam’s, she realized something shocking—he didn’t flinch.
“Let me explain,” Ethan said, his voice softening as he turned to her. “I knew the bond existed. I felt it the moment I chose you, Aria. But I couldn’t let it ruin what we had.”
“Ruin?” she echoed, her voice breaking.
“I suppressed it,” Ethan admitted, his tone desperate now. “For us. For the pack. A bond with Liam—it’s… unstable.”
“Unstable?” Liam’s voice was venomous. “Or inconvenient for you?”
The words hung in the air, each one laced with a history Aria couldn’t understand. Her chest ached, her thoughts spinning like leaves caught in a storm.
Ethan stepped closer, his hands on her shoulders. “Aria, you’re mine. You’ve always been mine.”
Before she could respond, Liam’s voice cut through the air like a blade. “You don’t get to decide that.”
The energy between the brothers was palpable, the tension crackling like a thunderstorm ready to break.
And then, it did.
The wind shifted, carrying with it a scent that made Aria’s blood run cold—pine and ash, tinged with something metallic.
“Klaus,” Liam said, his voice a growl.
Aria’s stomach twisted. She had never met Klaus, but his reputation was enough to haunt her dreams. The rival alpha was ruthless, a predator who thrived on chaos. And now he was here, in their territory.
Ethan’s head snapped toward the woods, his stance shifting into something primal. “We’ll settle this later,” he said, his tone leaving no room for argument. “Right now, we have bigger problems.”
But Liam didn’t move. His gaze was locked on Aria, his expression unreadable. “I’ll protect her,” he said.
“You don’t have the right,” Ethan spat.
“Try and stop me.”
The two brothers squared off, their standoff broken only by the snap of a branch. The shadows deepened, and from the darkness, a figure emerged.
Klaus.
He was taller than Aria expected, his presence almost suffocating. His dark hair fell in loose waves around his angular face, and his piercing green eyes seemed to gleam with malice. He wore a smirk that sent shivers down her spine, as if he were savoring the tension like fine wine.
“Well, well,” Klaus drawled, his voice smooth and cold. “A family reunion. How touching.”
Neither Ethan nor Liam moved, their attention fixed on Klaus. Aria, however, felt like she was being studied, dissected under his unrelenting gaze.
“And you must be Aria,” Klaus said, his smirk widening. “The little mate causing such a fuss.”
She tried to muster courage, but her voice felt trapped in her throat. Klaus took a slow step forward, his movements deliberate and predatory.
“Stay back,” Ethan growled, his tone vibrating with authority.
Klaus raised a brow. “Or what, dear brother?” He tilted his head toward Liam. “Oh wait, not brother anymore, is he? Looks like you’ve got your own mess to clean up.”
Liam snarled, stepping in front of Aria. “Leave her out of this.”
Klaus laughed, a deep, hollow sound. “Oh, I think not. She’s the key to all of this, isn’t she? The bond, the tension, the chaos.” He gestured toward Aria, his green eyes darkening. “You’re quite the prize, little one.”
Aria’s blood turned to ice. She wanted to step back, to run, but something inside her kept her rooted to the spot.
Klaus’s smile vanished, his expression hardening. “But make no mistake,” he said, his voice dropping, “you’ll be mine before this is over.”
The air seemed to thicken as his words hung between them. Ethan’s fists clenched, his alpha growl rumbling low in his chest. Liam’s jaw tightened, his body coiled like a spring.
“Enough,” Ethan snapped. “You’ve crossed into our territory, Klaus. Leave, or I’ll make you regret it.”
Klaus chuckled, shaking his head. “Oh, Ethan. You’re always so predictable.” He glanced at Aria one last time, his gaze searing into hers. “I’ll see you soon.”
And just like that, he melted into the shadows, leaving behind a suffocating silence.
Aria exhaled shakily, her legs threatening to give out beneath her.
“We need to get back to the packhouse,” Ethan said, his voice tight. “Now.”
But Aria didn’t move. Her mind was spinning, her heart pounding with questions she couldn’t begin to ask. Why did Klaus’s words feel like a promise? And why, deep down, did a part of her believe him?
Liam touched her arm gently, his gray eyes soft. “Are you okay?”
She looked at him, then at Ethan, and realized with a sinking feeling that her world had just been shattered.
And this was only the beginning.
To be continued….
