Chapter 1

508 Words
I'm a vampire. My childhood friend is an incubus. He's spent every one of his heat cycles with me, yet he's always held back from going all the way. I figured he was just shy. Until I caught him flirting with the campus queen—and heard him telling his buddies that I was just a free ride. My heart ached with rage. "If he's gonna play pure love, then screw this!" Just then, someone stepped out of the booth next door—it was Winston Vance, Alverton University's aloof and untouchable campus heartthrob. His face was expressionless. "You're being too loud." But my gaze drifted past his face and landed on the two dark, damp spots on the front of his shirt. I froze. And then—a bullet-screen comment window popped up right in front of my eyes. A: [Ooh, look at him pretending. He's probably losing it inside hearing her voice.] B: [Poor broken puppy's been pining for her all this time. Every time she went to his apartment looking for that other guy, Winston spent the whole night under freezing cold showers.] C: [And he had to endure all that swelling pain from his heat cycle...] D: [If she just a bit down on him right now, he definitely wouldn't say no.] My fangs tingled with hunger. And I actually lunged at him. ***** I froze for a moment, instinctively sizing up the guy before me. His black hair brushed his neck, naturally tousled into soft, fine waves. His eyes were the classic droopy puppy-dog shape, the lower lids curving gently and softly. When he looked at someone, his eyelids lowered halfway—cool, distant, utterly void of warmth. Those innocent, tender eyes paired with that aloof expression created a stunning contradiction that was both alluring and unsettling. The aloof ice prince of Alverton University... had a crush on me? The air was thick with the clean, rich scent of a incubus' milk. I understood exactly what the bullet-screen comments meant. Haven't fed in days, I felt the familiar itch in my fangs. A green gleam flickered in my eyes. I'd always loved milk. And if that milk came with a side of rich, blood-boosting nourishment—wouldn't that make it even better? There were so few vampires in this world, and I had to keep my identity hidden. Ever since my vampire genes activated, I've been surviving on nutrient supplements. The chronic lack of energy had left my face pale and drawn. I'd once asked Dorian for a taste. He shot me down without a second thought. My throat tightened. My gaze dropped to the two damp patches on Winston's shirt. He was wearing a black button-down today—easy to miss if you weren't paying attention. Noticing the dark glint in my eyes, his expression shifted. His hand gripped the doorknob, ready to slam it shut. "Wait. Let me help you." I slipped past him and stepped inside. His face flushed crimson in an instant. He stared at me in disbelief. "What?"
